Sicily

We landed in Rome and headed directly to our closet of a room at the Hotel Forum. We spent the afternoon walking the city and taking in the sites including the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza di Spagna, and the Piazza Navona. Then we had dinner at the classic Roman restaurant Nino's.

The next morning we headed to the airport with time to spare and should not have had any problems making our flight in time. However, halfway there we found out that we were in the wrong car and were directed to return. When we were back, we were told to go to the airport. As a result, we barely made our flight. It took forever to get our luggage in Catania and when it arrived, Roland's was missing. We waited for another hour and a half for the next flight. Then headed to our villa in Mazzaró directly below Taormina with a connection via a funicular. Our villa, which is owned by a retired plastic surgeon, was spectacular with wonderful views.

Villa Amelia, our Sicilian home for the first week in Italy

Monday, the 26th, we explored Taormina and enjoyed lunch at a beautiful rooftop restaurant. On Tuesday, we drove to the beautiful Baroque town of Siracusa. We had a great day exploring the town and enjoying the perfect weather. We had a delicious lunch at a cooking school’s sidewalk cafe.

The rest of our time there we spent exploring our small town and Taormina and the local restaurants.
