Italy

We spent four weeks in Italy with Cheryl Millar. Cheryl has spent a lot of time in Italy while she was in merchandising and for many years as her favorite travel destination. Between her charm and Italian language skills, she is the perfect guide/companion for Italy. We spent a week each in Sicily, San Gimignano, Lake Garda, and on the Ligurian coast. We enjoyed beautiful weather, delicious food, fabulous accommodations, and beautiful scenery.

Our home for the week was a beautiful villa in Mazzaró a seaside town which is connected to Taormina directly above by funicular. We loved our villa, Taormina, and exploring our side of the island.

Saturday we flew back to Rome. We picked up our rental car and headed to San Gimignàno. We were met outside the town's walls as there is limited automobile access to the inside. Our apartment agent directed us to the apartment and helped get our voluminous luggage up 3 very long floors of stairs. Then the agent directed us to the garage outside the walls.

Our apartment was in the renovated ruins of one of the town's towers. It was a spectacular large contemporary with 3 bedrooms, living room, den, huge dining room, large kitchen, and rooftop terrace. It had great views of the surrounding fields and hills from the rooftop terrace and the Piazza di Cisterna which is the main piazza from the living room. The town itself is composed of charming narrow streets and passageways.

On the 8th, we drove from San Gimignano to Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda close to the Swiss border. Our apartment overlooked the ferry landing and Lake Garda, the perfect spot from which to explote the lake. The apartment was located convenient to groceries, fish, and meat markets. On Sunday we took the “tour train” to the picturesque old town at the top of the hill and enjoyed lunch there.

On the 15th we drove to Pieve Ligure on the Italian Riviera. Our large apartment was on the top floor of the former Pirelli estate. We enjoyed the wonderful gardens, terrace, and balcony with spectacular views of the Gulf of Genova and bordering towns. We were joined for most of the week by Fortunada, Cheryl’s friend and former landlady during her visits to the adjacent town of Bogliasco.
