The Cecilian Music Club is the second-oldest music club in the United States. We are a non-profit organization that provides programs for students, teachers, and community members of all ages interested in music and performance. We welcome you to join us as a member or attend one of our upcoming events!
All of us at the Cecilian Music Club are trying to adjust to the new reality and the virtual space. We greatly appreciate all of your support in making this year a meaningful and joyful experience for our students and our community.
For the safety of our community, our students, and the public, the Cecilian Music Club will be holding all programming in a virtual format during this academic year (September 2020 - June 2021). Cecilian Music Club Anniversary Publication
(Available for Purchase)
Arranged for Intermediate to Advanced-Level Piano Repertoire
Edited by George Borisov and Marina Strakovsky
This volume commemorates the 130th Anniversary of the Cecilian Music Club, one of the oldest surviving music societies in the United States. It contains two parts: a history of the Cecilian Music Club and a collection of Classical Era arrangements of lesser-known American and Russian composers.
The historical chapter chronicles the history of the Cecilian Music Club as it transformed from a small circle of highly trained female musicians trying to create an intellectual community for their own growth in New Jersey to a widespread professional network for teachers and community members in the Tri-State area.
The piano arrangements in this volume showcase composers from the U.S. and Russia, including William Brown, Dmitry Bortnyansky, Benjamin Carr, Feodor Dubiansky, and the first African-American composer to receive widespread public recognition in the U.S, Francis Johnson, among others. The arrangements are designed for the intermediate level and aim to introduce students to the complex history of the Classical Era by providing exposure to unknown works.
We would like to thank the Monmouth County Historical Association, NJ, which provided access to their archives, allowing us to view the Meeting Notes of the club going back to 1883, as well as many historical documents that revealed the role of music in our local history, as well as to the University of Pennsylvania Archives for providing access to the Keffer Collection of Music and The Anthology of Early American Keyboard Music (A-R Ed.). Our sincere thanks also goes to Marina A. Drozdova, Professor of Piano at the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow, Russia, for her generosity and willingness to share rare musical and historical material of Russian Classicism. Finally, we are happy to express our special thanks to Dr. Jim Manganaro of Princeton for his enthusiasm, encouragement and support of this project.
