Cheverly Nature Park Invasives Removal
January 19, 2015Cheverly Nature Park, featuring woods, native plant species, and a circular trail, may be our least known park. The park entrance is located at the top of the Tremont Avenue hill. The trail begins where the sidewalk ends. (To prevent erosion, please do not enter the park at Crest Avenue.)
Many of the park's trees are being strangled and ground vegetation suffocated by English Ivy.
The Cheverly Green Infrastructure Committee invites park neighbors and friends to help remove the ivy to help the trees and allow native plants to thrive.
When: Saturday, January 19th, 10 AM. This is Martin Luther King Day, a great day for community service!
Where: Meet at the top of Tremont Ave. (parking on street).
Some tools and gloves will be available, but if you wish to bring your own pruners or loppers, that will be helpful.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Great Backyard Bird Count in Cheverly

The PG/AA Chapter of the Maryland Native Plant Society and the Cheverly Green Infrastructure Science Advisory Committee are co-sponsoring nature hikes, coupled with the Great Backyard Bird Count of local birds, under the auspices of the Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology on four days (Friday through Monday) from February 13th to the 16th, 2015. Two public hikes are planned for Saturday and Sunday, February 14th and 15th at the Woodworth and Nature Parks respectively. Both hikes will be guided by experienced bird watchers. We will also be identifying trees and whatever native plants we come across. This is a great chance to get out, learn about birds and enjoy what nature has to offer this time of the year.
General Directions: Approach Cheverly from either south or north on B-W Parkway; take the exit for Cheverly onto Rte. 202 (Landover Rd), head east a few hundred feet and turn right onto Cheverly Ave heading south. Continue for six blocks to Forest Rd, after a small park on your left; from there follow specific directions for each hike below.
Woodworth Park, 6401 Forest Rd, Cheverly, MD. For Saturday hike at Woodworth Park turn left on Forest Rd. Follow it for about 4 blocks; on your right you will see the Town Hall at the end of a long entrance drive (opposite 64th Ave) Free parking is available on left side of Town Hall.
Cheverly Nature Park, after 3398 Tremont Ave., Cheverly, MD. [Address is for orientation only; owners are not associated with the hike]. For the Sunday hike turn right on Forest Rd and continue three blocks until the road splits; stay to the right and continue straight ahead for two more blocks passing Crest and then turn right on Tremont Ave; go to its end and park on street.
Bring: You will need a pair of binoculars; bird or plant guides are optional, but be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.
Note: Fairly easy walking on good trails, but there are some slopes to climb. May be cancelled for heavy rain, wind, or other inclement weather. Call 301-341-1261, if in doubt.
