Chinese: 車匿

Sanskrit: Tchanna, Prince Siddhartha's bodyguard, who followed him the night he left home to practice a religion. The two statues of Prince Siddhartha and Tchanna in front of the Caodaist Temple depict the story.

Xa thơ

Chinese: 車書

The vehicle of books (literally). The term refers to the civilization of a country.

Kinh Tụng Khi Vua Thăng Hà:

Giúp xã tắc tôi trung ra mặt,

Dẫy xa thơ trổi nhặt văn minh.

Prayer for the Late King:

Faithful officials are the main element

That builds a nation of high civilization.

Xa xí (Xa xỉ)

Chinese: 奢侈

Extravagant, excessive, wasteful.

Tân Luật, Ðiều 16:

Trong việc tống chung, không nên xa xí, không nên để lâu ngày, không nên dùng đồ âm công có màu sắc lòe loẹt, chỉ dùng toàn đồ trắng.

The New Canonical Codes - Article 16:

Funeral procedures should not be too extravagant, lengthy, or showy. The only color recommended is white.

Xá ân

Chinese: 赦恩

To forgive, to pardon.

Kinh Tắm Thánh:

Xin gìn giữ Thánh hình thanh bạch,

Xin xá ân rửa sạch tiền khiên.

Căn xưa ví dữ cũng hiền,

Dầu ra cửa tội đủ quyền cao siêu.

Prayer for Holy Bath:

Oh God! Please keep the child's body clean

And forgive all of his previous sins.

Despite bad behaviors he should be kind

And powerful enough to care about his life.

Xá cô

Chinese: 赦辜

The same as xá ân, i.e. to forgive, to pardon.

The bell striking stanza for Caodaist rites:

Thần chung thinh hướng phóng Phong Đô,

Địa Tạng khai môn phóng xá cô.

Tam Kỳ vận chuyển kim quang hiện,

Sám hối âm hồn xuất u đồ.

Translation:

The magic bell sounds travel to as far as Hell.

Then, Ksitigarbha Boddhisattva liberates all captives in cells.

The yellow beam appears, signaling everyone will be saved.

Remorseful hell beings follow the beam to leave Hell.

Xá linh quang

Chinese: 赦靈光

Xá: forgive. Linh quang: the soul. The phrase has the same meaning as xá ân and xá cô, i.e. to forgive, to pardon.

Chốn Dạ đài Thập Điện Từ Vương,

Thấy hình khổ lòng thương thảm thiết.

Giảm hình phạt bớt đường luy tiết,

Xá linh quang tiêu diệt tiền khiên,

Đặng nhẹ nhàng thẳng đến cung Tiên,

Nơi Phước địa ở yên tu luyện.

Prayer for Deliverance:

The Ten Lords of Hell feel so pity

For the sinners who are in extreme misery.

So they try to lessen the punishment,

And forgive the spirits for bad things they had done.

Then the spirits can go straight to paradise,

Where they can stay calm and think twice.

Chinese: 舍利

The relics of the Buddha. The term refers to crystal-like bead-shaped objects that are purportedly found among the cremated ashes of the Buddha. These relics are usually worshipped in Buddhist pagodas.

Burial Prayer:

Follow the Buddha to the World of Ultimate Bliss.

The door to the Nine Heavens opens for all spirits.

What a priest attains after achieving enlightenment.

Maitreya Prayer:

The good men and women, who listen to me, want to practice religion, pray to God the Mother (who brings up all living beings), and follow the Caodaist law, will attain enlightenment, return to their previous Buddhist status and escape the cycle of incarnation whether they are the already born or the unborn, the well-fated or the ill-fated, the guilty or the innocent, the thinking or the non thinking.

Xá thân

Chinese: 舍身

To devote oneself to.

Tỉnh ngộ xá thân tại Phạm môn,

Khuyến tu hậu nhựt độ sanh hồn.

Vô lao bất phục hồi chơn mạng,

English:

Wake up and devote yourself to religion.

Your religious work will save your soul later on.

Without karmic merits you can't return to Heaven

Or, right on earth, attain enlightenment.

Chinese: 赦罪

The phrase has the same meaning as xá linh quang, xá ân and xá cô, i.e. to forgive, to pardon.

Xác Chí Linh

Chinese: 殼至靈

The sacred corpse (literally). The phrase refers to Cửu Trùng Ðài (Nine- Level Tower), which is the material part or the Caodaist Executive Body.

Note:

Caodaism comprises three parts called Đài (Tower).

1. Cửu Trùng Ðài (Nine- Level Tower) is the material part or the Executive Body, led by Giáo Tông.

2. Hiệp Thiên Ðài (Communion Tower) is the mind or the Judiciary Body, led by Hộ Pháp.

3. Bát Quái Ðài (Octagonal Tower) is the spirit or the Divine Body, led by God.

Thánh Ngôn Hiệp Tuyển:

Mầng nhau vì thấy giúp nên nhau,

Mầng Ðạo từ đây đẹp vẻ màu.

Mầng xác chí linh thêm mãnh lực,

The human physical body.

Prayer for Shrouding:

All of the worldly desires no longer tie you down

And the sacrament helps erase your seven feelings.

To Heaven just start the holy journey.

It's time you leave your godlike physical body.

XANG

Xang Thiên

Chinese: 撐天

Supporting the sky.

Kinh Phật Giáo:

Thổ khí thành hồng,

Nhi nhứt trụ xang thiên.

Hóa kiếm thành xích,

Nhi tam phân thác địa.

Buddhism Prayer:

Vomiting some gas to make a rainbow,

Which is the pillar supporting the sky.

Turning a sword into a ruler,

Which is three "phân" long, supporting the earth.

Note:

Phân - the unit of measurement in ancient China, equal to 3,33 millimeters.

Xanh xanh

The sky-blue (Literally). The phrase refers to God. Also Trời xanh, Cao xanh, Ông xanh, etc.

Xanh xanh nào có phụ người hiền,

Ðã thấy trọn quyền đấng Chí Thiên.

Lo lập nghĩa nhân đồng loại giúp,

Ðừng ham quyền thế một mình riêng.

God helps virtuous people very frequently.

Don't you see how powerful God is?

Just fulfill your religious responsibilities

And you'll be supported by everybody.

XAO

Xao tâm động trí (Xao động tâm trí)

Excited, agitated.

Thánh Ngôn Hiệp Tuyển:

Chớ nên xao tâm động trí, ngơ ngẩn theo thường tình, thì não cân được tự minh, mới có thể ngăn cản tà mị độn nhập vào mà khuấy rối; ấy là lời dặn đinh ninh, nếu chẳng lưu tâm, thì chẳng khỏi sự khổ xảy tới.

Disciples, do not get so agitated or confused like stupid people, so you can stay calm and intelligent enough to prevent evil thoughts from entering your mind. If you ignore this good tip, you will surely get into trouble.

A clever trick.

Còn một hạng nữa thì lại đang mê mẩn trong vòng vật chất, lầm tưởng cho nền Đạo là một cơ quan xảo kế của phàm nhơn sáng tạo để mê hoặc tâm lý người đời mà xem dường như rẻ rúng.

Caodaist Act 1938:

Others who are enthralled by worldly fame and fortune thought Caodaism was somebody's clever trick, so they look down on it.

Chinese: 巧媚

To trick, to cheat, to deceive.

Cho hay Trời Phật chí công bình,

Trước mắt ngờ ngờ thấy phép linh.

Remember that deities are extremely fair.

Their miracles can be witnessed everywhere.

No sinners can escape their penalizing.

Dishonest, cheating, deceitful.

Xẩn bẩn

Wandering, loitering.

Ấy vậy, nên biết mà răn mình, cái tâm là vật người không thấy được, khá giồi trau nó trước, nếu bỏ tâm kia ra ngoài mà rèn hình thể thì chẳng khác chi quì đọc kinh, đèn đốt đỏ hừng mà thiếu bức Thiên Nhãn trên điện vậy. Hồn ma bóng quế cũng lên ngồi, mà ngạ quỉ vô thường cũng xẩn bẩn, đó là phương đem đường cho quỉ vương chẳng một ai tránh được nghe.

Thus, remember to correct yourself. Begin with the heart, which is seen to no one. If you try to perfect your appearance alone, it is like a Caodaist rite without the Divine Eye on the altar. Then, nobody can prevent wandering ghosts and unpredictable hungry demons from dominating the rite.

Xây bàn

Table turning or table tipping, a kind of seance which was practiced in Europe in 1852 when the movement of Modern Spiritualism came there from America. To consult the spirits, some people sat around a table, putting their hands over it and wait. If a spirit came, the table would tilt or tip to spell the words like the process of a ouija board.

In Sài Gòn, Việt Nam in 1925, Mr. Cao Quỳnh Cư, Mr. Cao Quỳnh Diêu, Mr. Phạm Công Tắc and Mr. Cao Hoài Sang tried table tipping. Thanks to those first seances, they could contact the deities leading to the establishment of Caodaism later.

Xe Như ý

The vehicle of wish (lit), which is said to be the means of transportation in Heaven. This vehicle travels as the rider wishes.

Kinh Ðệ Ngũ cửu:

Kỵ kim quang kiến Lão Quân.

Dựa xe Như ý, oai thần tiển thăng.

Funeral Prayer for the Fifth Nine- day Period:

Flying on a beam of yellow light to report to God,

By vehicle of Như ý, Angels take the spirit to Heaven the utmost.

Xe Tiên

The same as xe Như Ý, pháp xa, i.e. the means of transportation in Heaven.

Đạo gốc bởi lòng thành tín hiệp,

Lòng nương nhang khói tiếp truyền ra.

I am sincerely saying the prayer at the moment

Through nine heavens for heavenly acknowledgement.

I sincerely pray to heavenly beings

And I pray for God's favor and blessing.

"Trước khi thủ cơ hay chấp bút thì phải thay y phục cho sạch sẽ, trang hoàng, tắm gội cho tinh khiết, rồi mới đặng đến trước bửu điện mà hành sự, chớ nên thiếu sót mà thất lễ.

Nếu chấp cơ thì phải để ý thanh bạch, không đặng tư tưởng đến việc phàm. Tay chấp cơ phải xông hương khử trược, tịnh tâm một lát, rồi phải để tinh thần tinh tấn mà xuất ngoại xác đến hầu dạy việc. Phải có một chơn linh tinh tấn mầu nhiệm, huyền diệu, phải trường trai mới đặng linh hồn tinh tấn, phải tập tành chí Thánh, Tiên, Phật mới phò cơ dạy đạo cả chúng sanh.

Kẻ phò cơ chấp bút cũng như tướng soái của Thầy, để truyền đạo cho thiên hạ. Các con đừng tưởng việc bút cơ là việc tầm thường."

"Before using the psychic pen, you should purify yourself by having a bath and dressing up, or your performance is considered impolite to deities.

While holding the psychic pen, you should clear your mind completely. Perfume your hands and meditate for a while so that your spirit can leave your body to meet a deity. To receive divine messages, which will become holy books for all human beings, you have to practice strict vegetarianism and follow the examples of the deities to have an extremely saintly spirit.

Caodaist psychics are My messengers to preach My word. Never think they're unimportant!"

Not so fond of the secular fame or money.

Lead a religious life in poverty

(The curtain of doctrine) has covered the secular society (literally), i.e. the religious community has developed well enough.

Disciples, I have chosen a Holy House, which is your common house.

Besides, I'll make the New Canonical Codes based on the three religions. On the fifteenth of the Tenth lunar month, there is the Three-Religion Convention in the Holy House.

The ways of rite performance for the Third Amnesty will be determined in that Convention.

I unite the three religions to found My religion for you and I am your Father as well as the Religious Leader.

From now on, there will be the only true religion I have founded in Vietnam, which is called "National Religion". Remember that!

Thầy dạy về hại phần hồn các con, là khí chất (le sperme évaporé) nó bao bọc thân thể các con như khuôn bọc vậy, nơi trung tim của nó là óc, nơi cửa xuất nhập của nó là mỏ ác, gọi tiếng chữ là Vi Hộ; nơi ấy Hộ Pháp hằng đứng mà gìn giữ chơn linh các con khi luyện thành đạo, đặng hiệp một với Khí, rồi Khí mới thấu đến Chơn ần hiệp một mà siêu phàm nhập ánh; thì óc là nguồn cội của Khí mà óc cũng bị huyết mạch vận động vô chừng làm cho đến đỗi tán loạn đi thì chơn thần thế nào đặng an tịnh mà điều khiển; thân thể phải ra ngây dại, trở lại chất thú hình; mất phẩm nhơn loại rồi còn mong chi đặng phẩm Thần, Thánh, Tiên, Phật. Lại nữa, buổi loạn thần ấy để cửa trống cho tà mị xung đột vào, giục các con làm việc tội tình mà phải phận luân hồi muôn kiếp.

Second, alcohol also damages your mind. Your mind or your second body is the evaporating sperm, which envelopes your physical body. Its core is the brain and its entrance is the fontanel. The entrance is called Vi Hộ, where the Dharma Guardian constantly guards your soul. It is very crucial during esoteric practice when Dharma Guardian helps unite your Tinh (body), Khí (mind) and Thần (soul) so that you can achieve the status of a god. Hence, the brain, in which the mind originates, is also pushed to work too hard to command the whole body. Then you literally become an animal, not a man anymore, much less a god. Tứ Đại Điều Qui:

1. Phải tuân lời dạy của bề trên, chẳng hổ chịu cho bực thấp hơn điều độ. Lấy lễ hòa người. Lỡ làm lỗi, phải ăn năn chịu thiệt.

2. Chớ khoe tài đừng cao ngạo quên mình mà làm nên cho người. Giúp người nên Ðạo. Ðừng nhớ cừu riêng, chớ che lấp người hiền.

3. Bạc tiền xuất nhập phân minh, đừng mượn vay không trả. Ðối với trên, dưới đừng lờn dễ, trên dạy dưới lấy lễ, dưới gián trên đừng thất khiêm cung.

4. Trước mặt sau lưng, cũng đồng một bực, đừng kỉnh trước rồi khi sau. Ðừng thấy đồng đạo tranh đua ngồi mà xem không để lời hòa giải, đừng lấy chung làm riêng đừng vụ riêng mà bỏ việc chung. Pháp luật phải tuân, đừng lấy ý riêng mà trái trên dễ dưới. Ðừng cậy quyền mà yểm tài người.

The Four Great Commandments.

A Caodaist adherent must obey his seniors, be willing to take orders from a higher-ranking dignitary, who is less knowledgeable or experienced, be polite to others all the time and be willing to confess his mistakes.

A Caodaist adherent mustn't show off , boast, care only for himself, keep personal old hatred or hinder kind people. He must help others get religion.

A Caodaist adherent must be financially honest and always behave well towards both higher and lower ranking dignitaries.

A Caodaist adherent mustn't scorn anyone behind his back, look on an argument between Caodaists without an attempt to settle it, or consider personal interest more important than the public one. He must also seriously observe the Caodaist Canonical Codes

In the past, Hớn Bái Công (Emperor Gaozu) was not a wise King, but his dynasty was destined to last over 300 years. He hated talents, betrayed partners, like flatterers, and killed trusty talented generals (having achieved lots of feats of arms). Cái quyền hành lớn lao ấy, do Thầy ban cho nó nên đặng quyền cám dỗ các con, xúi biểu các con, giành giựt các con, mà làm tay chơn bộ hạ trong vòng tôi tớ nó.
