T20 Update - 20//05/14

Post date: May 24, 2014 7:39:46 PM

After a 10 wicket win last week, the T20 1st XI travelled to South Petherwin for our first trip into Cornwall in the TEL season. With Gary, Nielo and Ian pulling out on the day due to illness and injuries, Simon and Rhys were handed first team debuts and Scott took the reins as captain.

After losing the toss and being asked to field, Dan Fogerty opened up the bowling with Jake Barber. Jake (5-31-3) picked up early wickets but was leaking runs whereas Dan at the other end was more economical at the other end (5-11-2). After 10 overs South Petherwin were 5 down with just 43 runs on the board. Next change was Tom Fogerty (4-1-3) who the opposition found very difficult to get away, with Tom throwing down three wicket maidens! Rob Sandercock came on the other end and got a wicket early up, but after his fifer last week, this was his only wicket with a couple of chances being missed off his bowling. Alex Jopling came on the 3rd change for Tom Fogs and was his usually self bowling 5 good balls and 1 loose one. South Petherwin finished their 20 overs for 83 ao. which we hoped to chase down in quick time like last week.

Pat Ewen and Mark Butler opened up but both fell cheaply playing attacking shots. Next man Simon Westlake (Junior) came in and quickly followed the openers back to the hutch. Rhys Mellor-Bond and Scotty came in and steadied the ship for a couple of overs before Rhys fell for 1. Then Tom Fogs came in and were hopeful that seasoned pro's Scott and Tom could finish off the run chase. Unfortunately we were wrong, as Scott fell to a leading edge and Tom, coming off the back of a ton on Saturday, flicked the ball straight to mid-wicket leaving us in deep trouble at 15-6! Rob and Jop were the next two in and scored good runs before Rob missed a straight one and was also heading back to the pavilion, which brought Jake Barber to the crease. Unbelievably Jopling was then out LBW, which brought another hero of Saturdays run chase Dan Fog in with the score at a somewhat embarrassing 34-8. Fortunately for us, Jake and Dan started fluently hitting boundaries when the change bowling came on. The pair brought the score up to 77 until Dan decided to give everyone a go and got bowled to bring Dean to the crease. Dean managed to see us home and score the winning runs with Jake playing a good supporting role. A bit different to last week's 10-wicket win but 2 valuable points all the same! The win made it two wins from 2 for the 1XI, who will hope to continue their good form.

The 2nd XI faced Lydford at home, we batted first and made 130, with the main contributors being Stuart Tolley (25) and James Stevens (36). In reply, Lydford could only muster 111 all out, which was boosted by 55 from Martin Creddicott. Wickets were shared between the bowlers, with the pick of them being James Turner who picked up 3 for 2 in his 2 overs.

Next week the 1s face Tavistock and the 2s have no game, presumably as part of their strength and conditioning routine...
