Bridestowe 2nd XI v Bover Tracey 3rd XI - 7th August 2016

So this is how it panned out…

Lots of talk about what we might do if we win the toss, which again proved fruitless as we had Lee Jutson was the tosser(coin). Yet another one lost! Hasn’t won for the twos in two years or so now.

So inserted to bat against the third in the league (although adrift of us by some 20 odd points). Batstone and Tim Smith opening the events. Batsone with some sort of rush of blood decided that the opening bowler simply had to ‘go’ three swishes – no contact mind - was followed by a fourth which bowled him neck and crop. Some say that is also his full quota of attacking shots used up for the remainder of the season.

This brought birthday boy Ian Jutson to the crease. He and Tim worked the ball around and started to get some real momentum going, despite the very low and variable bounce of the wicket. Bovey switched their attack around, the most entertaining of which was their left arm spinner. He turned it so much that Shaw setting himself to hit the ball go so turned around he ended up paddling the ball backwards between his legs and to fine leg in probably the most tangled comic shot ever to be displayed at Millaton.

Ian and Tim started to get on top however and 100 was passed in only the 16th over. Tim was first past 50, joined by Ian shortly after – 50 on his birthday!! The partnership was finally broken by an absolutely outstanding one handed catch as the fielder stumbled and fell over backwards. Unlucky for Ian (52), but by now we were in the 26th over and Briddy were already on 158.

Andrew ‘two ball’ Brimmacombe strode to the crease and was informed by Tim ‘the ball is coming in to you’. Brimmerstook guard and kicked out his front leg shouldering arms to his first ball…which immediately cut into him and bowled him middle stump between his legs. Now referred to as ‘one ball’ brimmers!!

Lee Jutson now joined Tim and the pair kept the scoring going through 200 before Tim finally fell on 113 charging down the wicket attempting to deposit the ball over the ropes on the full yet again. Batsmen came and went leaving Lee stranded on 48* just short of only his second ever 50.

The Bovey bowling looking a little sick, with probably the best of their bowlers T Ingham – Hill. Allegedly a spinner …that is one that runs in off 8 or 9 paces and rolls his fingers down the ball. A heated debate between Batstone (now on umpiring duties) and the Bovey skipper could have gotten overheated, but was calmed down by the Briddy skipper Jutters who agreed to let Bovey overbowled despite his age….Hmmmm! Anyway his figures 9-1-41-3.

Bridestowe retired at the end of their innings for a most excellent tea on a very healthy 262 for 9.

So second innings and Bovey with a mountain to climb. The usual new ball pairing of Tim Shaw and Lee Juston bowled the first 12 overs by which time Bovey had scaled the heady heights of 14 runs with 1 wicket down. Dale Harris, first change from top end, started to deconstruct the Bovey innings by removing the stick Ingham-hill senior (15) and then the dangerous looking D Scott (36). Dale ended with 6-0-31-2.

Bovey now way off the rate, at the other end Joppers was also working away 7-0-30-2.

‘one ball’ brimmers rolled his arm over 5-1-8-1 as did EbbyValance 6-0-37-1.

The ex Briddy Chairman, Neon, umpired for a time and quote of the day ‘you are obviously having a lot of fun, but you really do need to get out of this league’

With the Pub beckoning the match was killed off with the return of the opening bowlers Tim Shaw 9-3-11-3 and Lee Jutson with a miserly 9-5-7-1.

Bovey 145 all out.

A win for Briddy IIs (20 pts) over BT IIIs (7 pts)

Briddy remain firmly in second place in the league, well set on 219 points, but behind Hatherleigh 243 points. Bovey Tracey in 3rd 160 points. With only 4 games left and 80 points up for grabs Briddy are in a good- but not secure place for promotion.

The only downside to the game was Sam Weeks pulling a ham-string following a light jog towards the ball. It may be fitness but more likely the sheer weight of his aviator shades that did the damage.

Next week – away to Letdown IIIs ( oops I mistyped ! …Lewdown IIIs)….second thoughts maybe I didn’t!
