Chagford 3XI vs Bridestowe 2XI - 18th June 2016

Post date: Jun 19, 2016 1:07:15 PM

The super 2's made the short journey to play Chagford 3rds at Spreyton.

Bridestowe lost the toss and were put into bat on a damp pitch. Without regular opener 'jazz hands' Batsone, Dave Jopling was promoted to open the innings with skipper Tim Shaw. It wasn't the best of starts as with 0 on the score board, Shaw was back to the pavillion with out troubling the scorers. Tom Mallett joined Joppers at the crease and started well, dispatching the bowlers all around the field. Joppers was then out as he mistimed a drive and was caught. Pat Ewen joined the confident Mallet at the crease and the two of them pushed the score over 50 before Pat was bowled by one that kept low for 13 Keiran Lee was again looking good with the bat until he was stumped for 14. Weeks and Tremain both fell to Collins with out adding many and it looked as if Briddy might struggle to make 100. Corey Holliday was next in and started well, but Mallett was bowled at the other end by Collins for a good 33. New recruit Adam 'Cutler' Holliday joined his son at the crease and they put together a good partnership, with Corey scoring quickly while Adam was holding up the other end. Corey was a little unlucky to depart as he got one that popped and was caught and bowled by Collins, the pick of the Chagford bowlers with 7-2-21-4. With the score on 91, and young Jack Shaw coming to the crease, Chagford were expecting an early finish. However, Adam had other ideas, with Jack ably blocking at one end, Adam dispatched the ball to all parts with ease. Eventually Jack's defence was beaten as he was bowled of his pads, leaving Adam not out for an excellent 36. The last pair put on a crucial stand over 40, which would prove vital in the outcome of the game. This meant that Chagford needed 134 to win on a difficult pitch.

Chagfords response was slow, with Pat Ewen and Tim Shaw both bowling very accurately. With pressure building, Stanbury was run out by a direct hit from Shaw. The next over was an eventful one as Chagford collapsed to 16/4, with Shaw taking the first BCC hatrick of the year. Dave Jopling replaced Ewen and settled in to his usual accurate line and length. With more pressure building, BCC picked up another run out, this time Ewen excellently throwing down the stumps from distance. Keiran Lee then held on to an impressive catch from the bowling of Jopling. Shaw then had another wicket with an lbw and ending with excellent figures of 9-5-12-4. Pat Ewen then finished his second spell with 9-2-16-0. Keiran Lee (7-0-22-1) turned his arm over for the first time this season, and was generating some good pace, claiming the important wicket of Collins for 38. Jopling kept the other end tied down (9-0-29-2) and kept Chagford behind the run rate. Corey bowled a tidy spell (6-1-14-0) and Ebby took the last wicket from the final ball of the game to seal the 20 points for the visitors. Chagford were all out 114, to lose by 20 runs.

It was another good win for the 2s, against the only side to beat them this year. Some excellent fielding and keeping by Smokey made the difference, and the 2s will look to get another win next week against Lewdown.
