Chagford CC 1XI vs. Bridestowe CC 1XI - 25th June 2016

Post date: Jun 26, 2016 6:52:26 PM

Bridestowe got back to winning ways with a convincing victory at Chagford. Chagford won the toss and batted first on what looked like a good pitch. Gary and Lavis opened up, and found some tidy areas, with both batsmen struggling to score. All of the runs came at one end as Filor dropped anchor while Fulner chanced his arm, chipping a few boundaries over the infield. Gary made early changes and it paid off as Naz got the breakthrough, with Filor spooning a catch to Gary at short mid-wicket. Jopling bowled a good spell but failed to pick up a wicket due to a few missed chances. Sam then came and had immediate success, a short ball was cut to Naz at point, who pushed the ball up to James in the gully to remove Fulner for 40. Sam soon had another as Penberthy snicked an easy chance to Phil at first slip. Naz was turning the ball square and was consistently beating Vos' outside edge, but it was Lord who went next out as Naz spun one through his gate. Sam then got the important wicket of Vos, who snicked one down the leg side to Pat who took an excellent catch. Sam then blew away Chagford's middle order, who couldn't handle the pace and movement that he was generating. At one stage Sam had incredible figures of 5-5-0-6, with Pat and the slip corden gobbling everything that came their way. After Sam went for his first run of the day, he decided to take a spell and Naz finished his allocation with fantastic figures of 9-4-16-2. With the score at 79-8, Lavis and Sizmur returned to try to get the last couple of wickets. Gary got one wicket but Penberthy and Holland were determined not to roll over and batted sensibly to get the score creeping towards 100. With overs running out, Penberthy decided to go on the attack, hitting a number of boundaries and one massive six into the field. The score moved on to 114 before both batsmen ended up at the same end, and a sensible throw from Phil to Gary at the bowler's end brought an end to the innings.

Gary and Phil began the Bridestowe reply, confident that we could chase the relatively low total. Chagford needed early wickets, and so opened with Lammonby and spinner Vos. The score reached 20 before Phil cut a short ball from Vos straight to backward point. That brought Jack to the crease, and him and Gary picked up the pace, hitting a number of boundaries to get the scoreboard moving. The pair batted sensibly before a change in the bowling did for Jacko as he clipped one off his legs nicely, only to be excellently caught at mid-wicket off Penberthy. James and Gary continued to push the score along at a good rate, and at 80-2 it seemed as if the visitors would cruise home in a hurry. However, James was then run out, and the run rate slowed considerably as the change bowlers hit some accurate lines. After some issues with cramp, Gary reached his half-century with a flash over the slips. In an attempt to finish things off he was caught at mid-off. Sam came in an tried to do the same and was bowled having a big swipe at the returning Lammonby. Jopling leveled the scores with a neat clip off his legs for four next ball and he and Naz scampered a leg bye to claim the win with more than ten overs left. So a relatively comfortable victory, thanks mainly to heroics with the ball from Sam, and a great captain's innings from Siz.

Next week the 1s host Plymouth CS&R and will be looking to pick up another win.
