HP Woodstock AA Battery Pack Mod

Battery packs for HP Woodstock calculators can be easily modified to use any AA batteries.

Just cut out the bar that runs across the top of the pack, and then remove one of the angled sides as you can see has been done to the pack in these pictures. Glue the springs to the back wall so they stay put. Now all you need to do is insert batteries in the orientations shown here.

The original batteries had flat ends, and the contacts inside the calculator were built around that premise. The negative ends of most batteries are flat enough to make good contact, but the positive "button" ends tend not to. So use a strip of metal to cover the button.

Note that the original batteries were also shorter (because they didn't have buttons) so button-top batteries will compress the springs more, leading to there being less "play" in the system and it therefore being significantly harder to remove the pack from the calculator! But it's easy to buy rechargeable buttonless AAs if it really bothers you.
