Fuller Replica

My replica of a Type 2 Fuller is made from PVC and acrylic pipe, with wood caps and handle, and brass cursors. Whereas the original has a 3" diameter outer drum for the spiral scale, mine is 3.5" just because it was convenient given the pipe I had on hand.

The wood caps are poplar and the handle was cleaved from an old solid wood rolling pin (contributed to the project by Wayne Harrison.) They are stained English Chestnut. The paper is coated with polyurethane mixed with turpentine to give it an older patina. The main scale is a little yellower than the inner scales because I used the last of my 20-year-old urethane on it.

The main (top) cursor was fashioned from a brass kickplate that used to be on my front door. (No, I didn't remove it for this project!) Cutting and shaping it was the hardest part of the project. I've seen two forms of Fuller cursors. One has flat pointers (see my original Fuller Type 1) and the other has the pointy ones I replicated here. From what I can tell, time separates the types. All Type 1s and 2s used the flat style up to some point, and then they both switched over to the pointy type. I don't know if this is coincident with when K&E started making Fullers or when the bakelite versions were introduced, or at some other time.

Following are some photos from the build.
