Notes on some of the answers

  • The world's first passenger railway which ran between Canterbury and Whitstable, opened in 1830. You can still walk along part of the route of the line which was closed a number of years ago and the World's first railway tunnel which formed part of the route runs beneath the University of Kent.

  • David Copperfield by Charles Dickens was set partly in Canterbury and mainly in Kent, where Dickens lived for some years and you can still see the reputed "House of Agnes" in Canterbury.

  • Mary Tourtel wrote the Rupert Bear stories and books which were very well known in the later 20th Century and are still published in the Daily Express newspaper

  • The Baedeker Raids were German bombing raids during the Second World War in relation for British raids on Germany. A spokesman for the German Foreign Office said in April 1942, "We shall go out and bomb every building in Britain marked with three stars in the Baedeker [tourist] Guide", one of which was Canterbury.
