One of the greatest tango musicians of all time was Carlos di Sarli. His music is still very popular in the dance halls of Buenos Aires.

He favored the piano, although he liked to feature other instruments throughout a tango. If you hear a tango with a strong piano, then strong violin, it will often be a di Sarli! His music is very conducive to dancing a great tango-- see the demonstration with world salon champions Lorena Gonzalez Cattaneo and Sebastian Acosta below.

Carlos di Sarli was born in Southern Argentina. His father, an Italian immigrant, ran a gunsmith shop. His mother was a singer and music was important in the family. Carlos received training in classical music.

In 1916, working in his father's store, he suffered an accident that cost him an eye and which forced him to wear dark glasses for the rest of his life. Once recovered from the accident, 13-year-old Carlos joined a company of traveling musicians, touring various provinces and playing popular music including tangos. He moved to Buenos Aires in 1923 and became an immediate success.
