Jose Mendez

Jose Méndez (El Gallego) 1930's

Jose Méndez was one of the best canyenguistas of the 1930's. He had extremely fast feet and he introduced a new stream of original dance moves using the African canyengue dance style. He danced at La Colonia Italiana in Buenos Aires. He and his partner "La Cachito" formed a dancing team known as Los Méndez, which always came out unscathed in dance competitions, because it was impossible to follow and match their playful, quick style. You can see his unique dancing style in this clip from the movie "Derecho viejo" (1951) about bandoneon player Eduardo Arolas who died at the age of 32.
