Carlos Gavito

Carlos Eduardo Gavito

(April 27, 1942 – July 1, 2005)

"Wait for the music!"

Carlos Gavito toured with Forever Tango throughout the 1990's, reviving interest in Argentine tango in the United States and Europe. He was noted for a style of tango in which both partners lean into each other, creating an embrace often called "the tent."

An excellent biography I Wanted to Dance - Carlos Gavito: Life, Passion and Tango by Ricardo Plazaola provides a glimpse of the exciting and sometimes dangerous life of a young milonguero growing up in the barrios of Argentina in the 1940's. Gavito led an adventurous life traveling the world and sharing his tango that he learned in the milongas of Buenos Aries. He spoke English, Italian, French and Portuguese fluently and could make himself understood in German, Russian and Japanese.

One of the most beautiful characteristics of his tango style is his ability to pause and patiently wait for the music-- something he learned from more experienced dancers. His ability to focus totally on the music rather than steps or choreography is key to his artistic talent. Watch him "wait for the music" in the videos below:
