Today, 7/7, I hiked out of Port Clinton, did 15 miles over, you guessed it, lots of rocks, except the last few miles which were blessedly smooth. The plan was to stay at a shelter at mile 1232 on Hawk Mountain Road and wait there for Ann to pick me up, which would have been 6-7 hours. But, just as I reached the road, another hiker was being dropped off by a guy known as Pickle. He asked me if I needed a ride and brought me into Hamburg where I was able to check into a hotel. It was a marvelous turn of events! Pickle owns a trucking company with 16 semis but no longer drives himself. His wife of 38 years died of pancreatic cancer 4 months ago. They had both been involved with hikers before she died. He is obviously still grieving and finds being around hikers helpful.
I'm now in Hamburg with Ann and will be slack packing for the next week or so! May take a much needed rest day tomorrow.
