Today I planned to get up in the morning, assess how I felt, and decide to take a rest day or hike on. I hiked on. Ankles and body in general felt fully recovered from Sisu Day. Today's hike was an easy 13.8 miles from Rock Gap to a nice high point called Wayah Bald where there is an old stone tower built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corp as a lookout for fires. Previous to that it was a place the Cherokee congregated. It offers a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding hills and we could see all the way to Clingman's Dome in the Smokies, another 80 miles away on the trail.
Today's hike brought me to mile 120 and as above, it felt very easy. No Sisu necessary. They say walking the entire trail takes 5 million steps. Doing the math, that means each mile takes 2284 steps and so I've done about 274,000 steps so far! Not a bad start, eh? But wait a minute...I haven't taken any steps at all. Birdman flies down the trail!!
Today went from Rock Gap to Wayah Bald, 13.8 miles, now at mile 120.
