Today was 13 miles from Sam's Gap to Spivey Gap and despite cold, sleet, and high winds it was very pleasant. We crossed a high area at 5000 some feet called Big Bald just as the winds and sleet were at their peak and it seemed like a winter wonderland. Yoda was back on the trail today and felt great. Good to have him back as a hiking partner. Alas, he leaves in about one week.
I've seen several yellow birch recently which usually grow in northern climates but also here at the higher altitudes. We have several growing on our land in Wisconsin including around the Sugar Shack. Seeing them made me think about the bygone missed Sap Season and how it would be ending right about now. We have tapped our maples each year since 2004 and have a grand time, especially with brother Keith and good friend Ralph, as well as many others who become involved. I have missed it dearly this year and plan to start a new streak in 2017. Hopefully the same crew will join me.
Now at mile 332.
