I turned 58 on Saturday Feb 20th and thought it ought to be commemorated in a special way.... because I was born in 1958. I saw it as a golden, golden, golden birthday. Throw in some silver, rubies, and diamonds too. Much grander than the traditional golden birthday which for me would have been when I turned 20. You could say 2 was also special since that was the month, but there's a reason it's written 2/20/58- it tells you the order of importance. So 2 is nothing, 20 grand, 58 stupendous.
So what was there to do on this incredibly important day? I thought it would be properly celebrated by throwing on my pack loaded with gear, a few Clif bars, and hydration bag full, hopping over the back fence, and hiking out to the cabin near Cashton. At 8:00 am out the door I went, eager to conquer the task ahead. 6 1/2 hours and 26 miles later with pack lighter with less water but feeling heavier with its 28 remaining pounds the destination was in sight. Hooray! Now time for some great food and birthday cake with family and friends gathered there.
A beautiful day indeed!
