2010-January-22:

In the past few months Ambigram Magazine has been hosting Ambigram Challenge contests. I have entered each one so far, not knowing what sort of competition I would be up against. Wouldn't you know it: Even famous ambigram artists such as John Langdon (artist for "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown) sumbit their entries to this Ambigram Challenge series. Anyways... The host site announces a theme for the challenge, sets a deadline, and waits for the entries to roll in. After the deadline the entries are judged, and the top few are listed in order of rank. Other quality entries are listed in random order.

It is always interesting to see what different artists will do when given a general theme to work with... or even a specific set of guidelines. Go ahead and browse their website to see the results of the past few challenges. Here are the two, so far, that I have made Honorable Mention:

http://www.ambigram.com/acac-holidays-2009-results - Mine is an 'infinite chain' of "Let It Snow" in bright blue, just like my greeting card design.

http://www.ambigram.com/acac-sadiq-shana-results - Mine is the 90-degree rotational 'symbiotogram' in green.

The latest challenge is on the theme of Love, with a deadline of midnight February 14, 2010. For more information, or to enter, read about it here. I have already submitted an entry of Scriptural Word Art -- I made a collage of the five "Love" scriptures listed on my Word Art Page. Superimposed over a soft background photograph of an open Bible, I arranged 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (the largest) in the center, flanked by the four smaller verses, two on the left and two on the right. When I had learned of the challenge, I only had four verses with acrostics built on the word LOVE. I would have had an empty corner. So I got right to work on another "Love" Scripture Art: John 13:35. After I had them arranged to my satisfaction, I sent in my entry, printed off a copy for my binder, and I gave Mom a copy too. I am considering a second entry for this challenge, non-scriptural this time. We'll see what comes of it.

Have a Great Day,

Rebecca May
