511 Tactical Pen
How To Select A Tactical Pen For Your Law Enforcement Patrol
At one time, when I was a rookie law enforcement officer, I carried a Smith & Wesson 511 tactical pen. It was probably my favorite pen and I still carry it today as a small piece of my uniform, just in case. That little pen has served me well over the years and has even saved me from many a mishap.
A tactical pen has been designed to serve as law enforcement officers by allowing them to create makeshift handcuffs. A solid and consistent force with a tough point allows the officer to grasp the wrist of a suspect, while creating a non-toxic contact on the material inside the wrist cuff. The acrylic plastic's strength allows the cuff to resist pressure from the cuff bar so that the handcuffs are not excessively tight.
A tactical pen is also great for when an officer is in the line of fire. High quality hard plastic of the tungsten carbide tip can be inserted into the barrel of the gun, which then creates a tactical flashlight. It also has a forward and rearward swivel, which makes the light flash from both sides.
There are many uses for tactical pens, but the ones listed here are the most commonly found and used. With these tips in mind, you should be able to select the right type of pen for your needs.
Officers at the forefront of crime fighting require the most use of tactical pens. They have been found to be invaluable in emergency situations, especially if they were to be used to provide support to other officers. When deployed with one officer in front of the fire, the tactical pen is used to allow support fire with the emergency weapon that has been equipped with the tungsten carbide tip.
Used to gain control of persons that are running away, or to control vehicles during car chases, tactical pens are highly effective. While the tip of the pen can break the skin on the hand that is attempting to take hold of the suspect, the point is not difficult to control. This allows the person trying to take the pen out of their pocket to be relatively easy to take into custody. They also help to distract the suspect while the other officers move in to make the arrest.
I often use a nifty little device that fits in my pocket to assist me with my tasks. On a warm day in a muggy climate, a pen on my person helps me to keep my wits about me. I carry the pen, while I pay attention to the situation at hand. If I am confronted by a criminal, I can quickly take out the pen and quickly write down the details.
Many law enforcement officers have small, not very helpful gadgets on their persons that allow them to gain access to locked areas. Some are as simple as cell phones, some are better. A simple cell phone GPS unit allows the officer to determine the location and movements of the criminal, but the downside is that it is more difficult to remember where you were located on the map.
A tactical pen has a much better ability to serve its purpose. A pen on your belt does not lose the important details of its location and it may not even remember the exact point of view from where you took the picture. The military and the general public have made tactical pens that are designed for this purpose.
There are many other uses for a tactical pen and one must be selective in their use. Just as the points can be used for a variety of tasks, so can the swivel. It can provide key information to help solve a crime.
A tactical pen is also ideal when an officer needs to identify a person or a group of people that may be involved in an accident. Using a tip from your phone or your cell phone, you can create a composite picture of the person responsible for the incident. With this information, you can begin your investigation and find the culprit before he gets away with it.
The fact is that a tactical pen can serve a variety of purposes and it is a great pen to have in your arsenal. If you want to start out with a little one for yourself, there are many on the market that you can purchase. They do have a particular class of design and size, so it is best to be sure of what you want.
