Health & Safety Policy
School of Architecture & Department of Landscape Architecture Health and Safety Policy Statement
It is the Policy of the School of Architecture & the Department of Landscape Architecture under the management of the Head of Departments to:
Maintain a safe and healthy working environment and safe methods of operation and ensure that the minimum legal standard of health and safety is achieved;
Ensure the provision and maintenance of premises, plant and equipment under the Department’s control to a safe level;
Bring to the attention of all employees their health and safety responsibilities within the Department, ensure continuing development of health and safety awareness for all staff and promote an attitude of safe working by employees;
Provide necessary information, instruction, training and supervision, to ensure the health and safety of employees at work and to ensure continuing development of health and safety awareness;
Ensure that where a risk is identified the line manager will ensure that approved safety equipment and protective clothing is provided and that it is used by the employee;
Encourage discussion between management and employees on safety, health and welfare matters and to ensure that a Departmental Health and Safety Committee is convened, and that twice yearly safety meetings are used as a forum by all staff for health and safety issues. Health and safety will form a standing agenda item at Department and Exec group meetings. The Health and Safety Committee meetings will make recommendations to the Head of Department who will take executive action as appropriate;
Treat students on placement within the Department as University employees for the placement period;
Appoint a Departmental Safety Officer who will receive appropriate training to assist and advise the Head of Department on the management of health and safety matters;
Ensure immediate and accurate reporting and investigation of accidents and incidents by the Departmental Safety Officer and the University Health and Safety Department;
Comply fully with the requirements of the University Health and Safety Policy and Arrangements.

H&S Objectives 2021-24
To support H&S Compliance and improvement in all areas of the H&S Culture at The University of Sheffield, a range of objectives are proposed:
1. A near-miss to incident reporting ratio of 5:1.
2. Mandatory Training Completion of over 90%.
3. Completion of all Actions arising from H&S activities (target 100%)
4. Completion of Core H&S Activities for all Departments (target 100%).
5. H&S Dept to carry out its review of the H&S Management System
