In 7th Grade, we are preparing for our Mythology project. Students will become experts on an assigned Greek deity, learning about their family tree, relationships, domain, and symbols, among other things. They will craft a presentation that highlights the deity's key traits, utilizes vocabulary from our mythology text, Panorama, and makes a link between the deity, their Roman aspects, and similar deities from other cultures.
To provide perspective on the way that myths and the deities within them reflect beliefs, values, and other important aspects of a culture, I asked the students to construct a list of 5 aspects of life that are either essential or that play a large role in and society in 2018. Students then discussed their selections within small groups, then whittled down their list to the single key element. Using that element as a focus, students created a deity that represented that domain.
