SUMMER 2022 SEO ALUMNI: PATRICIA MARTINEZ
How would you describe your EP to someone who has never heard of it before?
I loved participating in The Experiment in Ghana. They did an amazing job forming my group, we were all people of color from the states and that helped build a sense of community. EIL works with SIT in Ghana and the staff from Ghana were really welcoming and flexible with our schedules. Some days we would go to our internships and rest afterwards. There were night activities for those who had enough energy to participate.
What is a typical day like during your EP?
I would wake up around 7:30 and get myself ready for the day. Breakfast was served at 8:00am and then we would go to our internships around 9:20am. In my internship I was apart of the fashion industry so I helped set up the instagram shop and contacted Ghanian fashion designers. Then by 4:00pm we would leave the internship site and return to the hotel. We would have lunch and after that it would depend on the day. Sometimes we stayed in the hotel and had a debrief or we would go out to karaoke night or something similar.
What was the biggest challenge of your EP?
The biggest challenge was adjusting to the time, because I would end up sleeping really late and having to wake up in a few hours. Ghana’s time is 4 hours ahead so it felt like the days were going by quickly.
What was the biggest reward of your EP?
The biggest reward was the friends that I have. I still keep in touch with my roommates from the hotel and a girl who helped me start reading my bible.
What do you wish you had known before you went on your EP?
I wish I would’ve had a better understanding of the currency because I kept on trying to convert and that wasn't helping me at all. I just needed to understand that it’s different and a certain amount might not be much to me but to those living there it was something.
What advice do you have for future SEO scholars who are considering your EP?
I would say go for it and ask questions about everything you need to know. Be aware of the weather and do your research on vaccines ahead of time. There are many requirements to travel abroad and my visa did not arrive until the day before I left because the paperwork was incorrect.
