The Brooklyn Queens Long Island Area Health Education Center (BQLI AHEC) Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP) is a six-week opportunity for aspiring high school and college students. The program exposes students to a variety of careers in health professions, as well as to various health issues affecting their communities.
Selected participants are committed to working at their designated clinic, community-based organization, or hospital three days a week during the day. In addition, participants attend a mandatory weekly workshop. The full-day workshops include health-related lectures, job-readiness training, field trips, and other health professions-related activities. Selected participants also are required to take part in a collaborative, health-themed project. Finally, participants close out their time with us by participating in a closing ceremony where they present their final projects.
Criteria for Participation:
Be 17 to 20 years of age by the start of the program.
Be a rising junior or senior in high school or freshman or sophomore in college.
Be a resident of Brooklyn or Queens.
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Have a sincere interest in health professions.
Be willing to complete 120 volunteer hours upon Internship completion.
