The Kumbh Mela is a religious festival that is celebrated 4 times over the course of 12 years, at Ujjain, Haridwar, Nashik and Prayagraj. The exact location is decided on the basis of the astrological configuration of the Sun and Jupiter in relation to the Earth. Our case study focused on the Kumbh Mela that takes place in Allahabad at the sangam of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. The festival takes place for 5 months from January to April, creating one of the largest temporal settlements for the pilgrims, along the river edge. One of the major activities is taking a dip at the sangam of Ganga and Yamuna rivers where the human landscape overpowers all built form and natural landscape. The constant rubbing of shoulders while trying to navigate through the space is essential to the Kumbh.
