The Kolkata book fair is conducted every year in the eastern part of Kolkata. The fairground is a reclaimed land with the slat land on one side. Various programs like Sourav Ganguly Cricket Academy, Karunamoyee Bus Stand, Salt Lake and a Pagoda surround the ground. The intent was to have vantage points overviewing all these activities. Also, the structure does not stand out from the existing surroundings but more dwells in it. Just as how a fair transforms from a closed-boxed tent to a public space. Thereby, designing a cafeteria which opens up to the public and also provides some intimate spaces for some. Therefore, using a shipping container as a structural unit provides an initial framework. Each panel provides a different experience by playing with the intensity of the light that falls on it. Each container is carefully designed by keeping in mind the climate of the site, the wind flow and availability of the material. The Kolkata port is at the proximity of 15 km from the site. The louvres and the windows are made from panels that are cut from the container. Thereby, saving the resources. Also, the tables are made from the pieces of the panels. The sitting space between the two modules of the bus stand and the fair is a small catta, a place where old book readers used to meet and have a chat.
