Cavalthy Canal
The Cavalthy Canal, gracefully winding its way between Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, historically relied on a singular bridge as the vital link connecting these two prominent regions. This bridge not only served as a practical pathway but also held cultural significance, particularly during events like the Kochi Biennale, where it became a crucial node for visitors.
Unfortunately, the once bustling bridge now lies broken, disrupting the seamless connection between Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. This fracture compels locals and tourists to navigate a circuitous route, elongating what was once a short and scenic journey. Recognizing the need for a transformative solution, I conceived an innovative intervention — a bridge that transcends conventional functionality.
This envisioned structure is more than a mere crossing; it is a dynamic space designed to reconnect Fort Kochi and Mattancherry seamlessly. Going beyond restoration, the design incorporates a visionary concept: a multifunctional bridge that doubles as a cafeteria. This dual-purpose space not only reinstates accessibility but also becomes a communal hub, fostering social interactions and cultural exchanges. The overarching goal of this design is to create a transactional and binding space, reinstating the efficient link between these historically significant areas while adding a new dimension of communal engagement and cultural vibrancy.
