This unit includes Native/Indigenous stories from the Oneida, Gwich’in, and Isleta Pueblo tribes. This unit is designed to increase students’ resilience and sense of belonging. According to Brokenleg’s Circle of Courage, an Indigenous strength-based framework based in the medicine wheel, it is critical for Native/Indigenous youth to feel a spirit of belonging. Belonging facilitates safety and helps youth feel seen, heard, and loved. If students do not find a sense of belonging in their classrooms or schools at large, they will find maladaptive ways to “belong” (e.g. gangs, delinquent activities).
