This unit is designed to increase Native students’ resilience through examining Kumeyaay and Yaqui history and personal stories of resilience. The students were asked to “call in” or think about important people in their lives that make them feel safe, calm, or strong. In doing this, students were given the opportunity to connect to the strength of their loved ones. This unit was also designed to teach social/emotional learning in the forms of identifying terms such as “emotional stress”, and various mindfulness/relaxation techniques.
