Most scholars enhance their competency in parent and community engagement with Native American communities through their grant site work. Direct service includes meeting with parents and families for discussion, relationship-building, and insight from vital members of the lives of our students. Engaging in resilience-based, culturally focused conversations to better develop interventions and collaboration for students has been a powerful experience for scholars.
Personal experiences of community engagement often grow through activities at summer, winter, and spring institute activities as well for project scholars. Community members will often join scholars to share stories, perspectives, and traditional knowledge with the group. Many guest lecturers who share with scholars are also elders, Indigenous community members and parents. Their generosity and presence create strong practice and growth for scholars to develop competencies and cross cultural collaboration skills in Native communities.
