02/24: Art of Memory

Welcome to Our Online Brain Fitness Class

BHQ site: (www.brainhq.com)

The Art of Memory Lesson

Once again, this week the basics and topics class share a topic, Memory. The basics lesson is very complete, describing memory systems, how memories are formed and stored, the brain physiology behind memory, and memory loss. Make sure to read it prior to this lesson.

And look for the Jeopardy game this week, which will provide a fun way to show what you learned. We will play in class, and on Zoom. After, we will upload to the lesson page so you can play alone or with your family and friends.

This week, our topics class will look at the Art of Memory, and some factors which can affect our memories. Included in this week’s lesson is some information on sleep, on reconstructing memories and on the impact of aging. Definitely look at the online version of the lesson. There are lots of images and videos, including a very fascinating (rerun) of a video by Professor Loftus, an expert in memory restructuring. If you wish, you can view and/or download the handout. If you would like, view the PowerPoint presentation here. When you are done, take this short quiz.

The BrainHQ Connection

Mary's fascinating lesson, along with her Basics Lesson, offer so much information about Memory, that there is little more to cover. But the BrainHQ website has some interesting articles that support our lessons and explain how the BHQ Memory exercises help to strengthen and record events more correctly for more accurate and longer lasting memories/recall. Check out these articles from the BHQ site:

Here's a short article with lots of useful links to information about memory; what it is, different types of memory, research and studies on memory, what the BHQ memory exercises do, and even a fun game to find your personal memory bump (try it, it's very enlightening). Read How to Use BrainHQ Brain Training Exercises to Improve Your Memory to learn more.

This article contains some easy and very practical activities to help boost your memory through simple lifestyle changes. Read Memory Loss is Not an Automatic Side Effect of Aging to learn how to enhance your memory naturally, just by changing a few everyday habits.

Memory Matters was actually written even before the original Brain Fitness Program became the BrainHQ program that we are now using in our class. This article helps to explain why the exercises AND the lessons we offer in our classes are so important to improving our brains. The article refers to a class where students learn and are quizzed on new information and concepts, and also learn about simple techniques (practical applications) to keep their memory strong (sound familiar?). Our Brain Fitness classes are based in part on lessons we learned from articles like this. You might like to check out the book referenced here, as well. It's called The Memory Bible and can be found on Amazon, if you're interested.
