Preventing Alzheimer's Disease Lesson

As an older adult, perhaps you have grown a little more concerned about the possibility of acquiring a neurodegenerative disease, like Alzheimer’s. It is natural, as we become more aware of our mortality, to become concerned about our health and how to preserve it. Our Brain Fitness classes are designed to educate, inform, and help you learn how you can change your lifestyle and preserve your brain health, with a message of hope and some concrete steps to best maintain optimal brain health.

This lesson is one of hope. In this lesson, we focus on Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease that to many seems hopeless. But we will focus on the emerging consensus among scientists and the medical community that Alzheimer’s disease may indeed be preventable. This is one of the greatest messages of hope we can hear. The BrainHQ Connection

The BrainHQ Newsletter

As Debbie’s lesson taught us, new developments in diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) are making great strides toward slowing and potentially reversing (or even preventing) the effects of the disease through early intervention. In a recent BrainHQ Newsletter (July 2020), one of the leading articles was on a Breakthrough in Alzheimer’s Diagnosis that appears to be just around the corner. The simple, low-cost blood test can detect signs of AD, even 20 years prior to having symptoms; which could rule out other less-aggressive forms of dementia, and would allow AD-specific treatment to start decades earlier than currently detectable. “It’s not a cure, it’s not a treatment, but you can’t treat the disease without being able to diagnose it.”

In another article on the BrainHQ website, the benefits of the BrainHQ exercises are discussed as they relate to Alzheimer’s. As Dr. Gupta mentions in his article and video, lifestyle choices and brain exercises do make a difference in how our brains age. He specifically points out the need for speed – brain speed – in keeping our brains functioning efficiently and effectively.
