Abstract

Discipline establishes the norms on what should be the behavior of a student inside the classroom. Educators, parents, and the entire society are equally concerned on the discipline of students and molding the behavior of the learners is a big challenge to educators to meet the expectations of the society. This study determined the effect of discipline on the behavior and academic performance of the ABM (Accountancy, Business and Management) students. The study adopted a descriptive survey. A survey questionnaire checklist was distributed through online to 119 ABM students: 54 for Grade 11 and 65 for Grade 12 students. Data were tabulated and analyzed through getting the mean percentage score and using graphical method. Majority of the respondents were female, 65.6%. The results pointed out that bullying, 70.59% of the respondents and problems at home, 58.82% were the primary factors that contribute to unproductive students. Accordingly, students were required by their teachers to explain the learning tasks clearly, telling them that they can perform better if they will study hard, and have good control of the class. The students also believed that studying hard and preparing for quizzes and test were the keys to get good grades and these can be done if these lessons prepared by the teachers were interesting. The teaching strategies used by the teachers and friends’ influence had effect on the students’ behavior and academic performance. Hence, educators and curriculum planners may look into the possibilities of developing strategies to address the problems in behavior vis-a-vis poor academic performance of some ABM students.
