Abstract

Background: Rubrics for the assessment of the physical therapy students’ skills in a range of motion exercise should be developed in a method that promotes validity. Understanding the appropriate criteria for the rubric may provide an opportunity to have an accurate grading process during practical examination. The purpose of this study is to develop a valid rubric for the evaluation of physical therapy students’ skills in the range of motion exercise. Methods: This study modifies the acquired from the Institute of Physical Therapy of St. Dominic College of Asia that evaluates the skills of physical therapy students in a range of motion exercise. A panel of five (5) content experts was used to validate the instrument through quantitative (content validity) methods. Content Validity Index, Content Validity Ratio, and Kappa statistic are the statistical methods used to evaluate the clarity, essence, relevance, and representativeness of each criterion to the learning outcome. Results: The modified rubric consists of five (5) domains with fifteen (15) criterion that assesses the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills of the student in a range of motion exercise. The quantitative method showed high content validity of individual criterion (I-CVI range 0.8 to 1.00) and high overall content validity (S-CVI/UA= 0.87 to 1.00 and S-CVI/Ave = 0.97 to 1.00). Moreover, the Kappa statistic showed an excellent content validity for all the criteria in the rubric. Conclusion: The development and evaluation of the modified rubric demonstrated high-item content validity for assessing the skills of physical therapy students in a range of motion exercise. Upon further validation, it is expected that this rubric might be used as a basis in creating rubrics for other topics related to clinical competencies and skills of physical therapy.
