Policlicks: Filipino values reflected on viral political issues in social media

Abstract
In the midst of the current digital age, the appearance of viral political issues is becoming more common on social media, especially in the Philippines wherein political disarray and debacles are present. This study was conducted with the intent of thoroughly analyzing such issues and the Filipino values put into practice. In order to acquire information, three (3) viral political issues have gone through the qualitative process of content analysis-- namely, #SEAGamesFail, Sen. Cynthia Villar on rising prices of commodities, and Sen. Bato Dela Rosa’s visa cancellation. To organize gained data, a coding form was utilized for this study. During this endeavor, it has been found that Filipino values that surface in these issues tend to become biased against the lower class and focus on the resignation of effort. This paper also discusses the following findings on certain aspects: politicians show Filipino values through passing work to someone else; netizens portray their Filipino values through defending, caring, and becoming concerned towards victims and themselves, and the prominent Filipino values are utilized as the base point for the understanding of the public towards the issue. This study investigated the topics chosen within the terms of action (politicians), reaction (netizens), and message validation. To define its importance, the study will serve as a basis for the understanding of certain patterns present in Filipino culture in relation to stands and biases on the viral political issues on social media which can be beneficial towards social media users, news organizations, politicians, psychologists, society, and future researchers.
