Abstract
There is increasing recognition that health professionals should engage in continuing professional development and lifelong learning. The current setting of clinical practice joins the need to adapt to change to keep up and give appropriate medical intervention. Maintenance of clinical abilities and knowledge are subject to general instruction and update.
This scoping review explored nurses’ perceptions of the challenges of continuing education program. Understanding the personal and professional motivations that shape learning needs are essential to high-quality continuing nursing education. A comprehensive search of the peer-reviewed journal from EBSCOhost, PubMed, and ProQuest was performed and ideas correspond to the study was discussed and developed by the researchers.
A total of 1,805 papers were screened and assessed for eligibility, 1,687 were screened out on initial assessment on title level, 68 were excluded on an abstract level, and 11 literatures were read on full text. Forty (40) literatures are out of scope, not a research paper and irretrievable full-text. Five important themes emerge. Majority of this literature was conducted in the United States of America. None of the published documents came from the Philippines. Results indicate that challenges faced by nurses based on the literature include lack of time, financial constraint, geographic accessibility, the relevance of CPD topic, and employer support.
A comprehensive assessment is a critical variable in program effectiveness and improved professional knowledge, skills, and performance. Understanding the challenges to CPD has been a significant discussion. Learning condition for competency affirmation includes the student in appraisal and responsibility; gives home-based learning openings and individualizes learning encounters. Conclusions from this investigation are helpful in making suggestions to increment nurse’s collaboration in CPD, prompting enhancement in the working environment.
