Entering Junior High (7-8) Social Science

Welcome to the Social Science Virtual Learning University page! We’re so glad you’re here! Below are some activities to challenge and keep you learning throughout the summer. If you are unable to complete the challenges below for any reason, feel free to adjust the activity to meet your learner's specific needs. Happy Learning!

Challenge 1:

Make a victory garden - during World War II, families on the homefront did their part by rationing food and creating a victory garden.

Challenge 2:

Create a map of historical events. This could include battlefield plans, Journey on the Oregon Trail or any historical event you’d like to learn more about.

Challenge 3:

Create a family budget for a day out. Where will you go? How much will you spend? Justify why you allocated those amounts to activities as you present it to your parents.

Challenge 4:

Interview a family member or family friend about a historical event they witnessed or were involved in (ie. World War 2, Vietnam, Ellis Island, September 11, Pearl Harbor, Moon Landing). Write a short summary of what you learned.

Challenge 5:

Go on a history scavenger hunt by finding local historical markers in your community. Consider places of interest like settlements, Native American History, etc. Find historical markers by going to the Illinois Historical Society website.

Challenge 6:

Visit the Illinois Holocaust Museum or browse the Holocaust Museum website. Read and learn about the stories of individuals who lived during the Holocaust. What can we do today from preventing a humanitarian crisis such as the Holocaust from happening again?
