Entering 6th Grade Social Science
Welcome to the Social Science Virtual Learning University page! We’re so glad you’re here! Below are some activities to challenge and keep you learning throughout the summer. If you are unable to complete the challenges below for any reason, feel free to adjust the activity to meet your learner's specific needs. Happy Learning!
Create a brochure for your community that entices people to live there. What sites, attractions, and services does the community have to offer? Consider redesigning the community’s symbol to include in your brochure.
What efforts is your state or community taking to conserve natural resources? What additional efforts do you think communities can take to conserve their local resources (ie. reducing pollution, recycling, etc.)? Consider creating a flyer to inform others in your community on what they can do to help.
Discuss with your parents how much money they spend on food, cell phones, clothes, entertainment, etc. for your family each month. Were you surprised? How could you show gratitude for their financial support?
Research a historical figure. Then, design a list of interview questions that you would ask that person. Write the answers that person would probably give to your questions. How might this figure be surprised if they were living today?
Plan a trip: use the internet, travel guidebooks, brochures, and maps to plan a dream day, weekend, week, or month-long trip. Tell where you would be going, how you’ll get there, and what you’ll bring.
Visit Cantigny and the first division museum. The museum offers information about local heroes, the World Wars, Vietnam and Iraq. You can also go to a re-enactment. Share what you have learned with your family.
