Procedures:

Placement in APPROVE

Procedure for students going before community control panel:

Students going to community control panel have been requested for expulsion and have not been found to have a relationship to their disability at a Manifestation Determination Conference (MDC).

The community control panel typically makes several different recommendations. They are:

  1. Return to home school with probationary contract

  2. Return to different school with probationary contract

  3. Expel for requested time with services at APPROVE

For a return to any school, a conference must be held prior to starting back at school with the Alternative to Expulsion contract explained and signed.

For placement at APPROVE,

    • the APPROVE Teacher of Service (TOS) will contact the sending Teacher of Record (TOR), by phone or email, and set up a re-entry conference for at least 1 week prior to the student’s expected return date.

    • The TOR is responsible to send out a notice at least 1 week prior to the re-entry conference. A student should not return to school without the re-entry conference being held. Topics to discuss at the re-entry will include:

        • credits/ grades earned at APPROVE

        • placement upon return to school

Minutes for APPROVE would be:

  • English/ Language Arts, 4 days/week. 75 Minutes/day – 300 minutes/wk,

  • Math/ Pre-Algebra/ Algebra, 4 days/week. 75 Minutes/day – 300 minutes/wk.

  • Minutes would equal 100% direct service in Sp. Ed. 600 minutes/wk.

Schedule:

  • Session 1 (Middle School): 8:30-11:00

  • Session 2 (High School): 11:00-1:15

  • Session 3 (High School): 1:15-3:45

Procedure for students placed at APPROVE for a 45 day alternative placement:

Students may be placed at APPROVE for a 45 day period as an alternative placement if they were found to have a relationship to their disability at the Expulsion MDC. This placement is made if the expulsion request involved weapons, drugs or substantial bodily harm.

  • The 45 day period begins when transportation starts. It does not begin when the student shows up at APPROVE. The 45 day period is school days, not calendar days.

  • If the 45 day period overlaps the beginning of a new 9 week grading period, arrangements can be made to shorten the time at APPROVE with the consent of a building administrator.

  • The APPROVE Teacher of Service (TOS) will contact the sending Teacher of Record (TOR), by phone or email, and set up a re-entry conference for at least 1 week prior to the student’s expected return date.

  • A re-entry conference should be scheduled for 45 days after a student is assigned to APPROVE. A student should not return to school without the re-entry conference being held. Topics to discuss at the re-entry will include

      • credits/ grades earned at APPROVE

      • placement upon return to school
