Students selected a photograph of a wild animal to use as a drawing reference. After a short demonstration, students began to draw. They used vine charcoal, drawing pencils, ebony pencils, graphite sticks, and/or white charcoal pencils. They began by lightly sketching the main shapes of their animal to block in the proportions and lay out the composition. Then, they added details through shading, outlining, and creating textures. Students were encouraged to NOT use an eraser until the finishing details. They worked with focus and determination. I’m so impressed with our students!

Students in grades K through 2 created mixed media yarn art. First, students dipped pieces of yarn in clear glue. Then they created a drawing with the sticky yarn, adhering each piece to a piece of white tagboard. During the next class, students used tempera paints and mixed tints and shades. They painted sections of their yarn art, turning their yarn drawings into mixed media pieces. I was amazed at the dedication the students had to these artworks they created over 3 class periods.

Students in grades K through 4 experimented with Gelli plate printmaking. They used a variety of materials and tools including brayers, texture rollers, leaves, string, stencils, and shells. They created prints by rolling on layers of paint onto Gelli plates, pressing objects gently onto the paint, and placing paper on top. After smoothing all areas of the paper, a print is ready to be pulled! Immediately after pulling the print, the students could add another piece of paper onto the Gelli plate to create a second print, called a ghost print. Gelli printing is a very expressive and experimental form of art-making that allows for endless possibilities of textures, layers, shapes, and more!

Students in grades 3-6 used drawing media (including pencil, marker, oil pastels, colored pencils, and crayons) to design their own holiday Jaguar. Students in grades K-2 decorated their own Jaguar paw prints! It was a fun and festive process to show school spirit and deck the halls for their Winter concert!

Students in grades K-6 created artworks to honor our veterans in time for the special ASM Veteran's Day program. Students selected images and colors to symbolize the sacrifice, bravery, and patriotism exemplified by our veterans. K-2 students created collages, 3/4 students created linocut prints, and 5/6 students chose their own 2D media. Many students chose to create artworks that incorporated the American flag. Some chose to depict specific branches of the military. K-2 What other patriotic themes can you see?

The students created these fall-themed artworks in time for the JGS Fall Festival tradition! These artworks include collage, drawing, watercolor, gelatin printmaking, linocut printmaking, and mixed media. Students chose their own fall subjects. Some, for example, focused on spooky themes, while others were inspired by the colors and textures of autumn foliage! It was exciting to see their individuality shine through their artworks.

After students completed drawing explorations, they came up with an idea for an artwork that used drawing media and techniques that they explored and practiced during the previous class. These drawings (on the left side) are W.O.W.! (Wonderful Original Works of art)
The artworks on the right are watercolor explorations. After students were shown a demonstration of different watercolor techniques, they tried them out on their own! As with the drawing explorations, the watercolor pieces show both mark-making (trying different brushes, varying amounts of pigment and water, etc) and creations that depict recognizable forms.

Students tried a variety of drawing media during their first month in art class. In the display case, you'll see drawing experiments and practices from grades K - 6. Students made discoveries about the qualities of each drawing media and how the different media interact with each other. Some artworks show a recognizable form, whereas others show mark-making.
