Several weeks ago enthusiastic cross-country ski parents got together to brainstorm ways to stay connected with other families over the summer months and begin the process of creating a Jackson XC Ski Team. Jen Pribble, JGS alumni parent, is using the Team Snap online platform to help organize interested families and their children to share events, communicate with each other and get folks connected for the 2024-2025 ski season. Jackson XC Ski Team is all about fun on XC skis, with opportunities to race for those who are interested. Did your child enjoy XC skiing at PE, have fun with their friends during the After-School Program, ski with the (free) Speed Camp program, take part in the Saturday programs at Jackson XC and/or just love being out with friends on skis last winter? Sign up to stay connected with other XC friends over the summer by completing this form: https://forms.gle/ep7QtfSwRgp8V96g9 .
From organized activities (ranging from free to low cost) to creating a meetup of your own with friends anywhere in the outdoors, stay active and have fun!
Emily Benson
Jackson XC Board of Directors/Youth Committee Chair
P.S. While we are looking at these activities as a way to keep the XC spirit going strong all summer you don't have to be an XC skier to sign up and see who else will be at the many hiking/walking/running activities that will be linked through the app.
Mrs. Weeder led the K1234 on a field trip to the KinderKonzert at Conway El (where her professor was performing!) and then to sing the Spring Concert at the Adult Day Care Center! What musical morning!

Hey, Moms, Dads, and Grands!
Arrival time at school is 8:20 - that's when teachers are here and ready for your students.
If you need to drop your student earlier, please let us know the day before so that supervision is available. (Mrs. Bailey/Ms Bean/ Ms Amy's students - we're ready for you on the days you're scheduled to come early. Otherwise, please let us know.)
Can't make 8:20? School starts at 8:30 and arrivals after that are marked Unexcused Tardies unless I have a note from an appointment or information from parents/guardians.

Support Local Odyssey of the Mind team! At least one local Odyssey of the Mind team is planning to make the trip to the World Finals in Iowa in May! The team needs to raise a lot of money in the next few weeks, so they're looking for donations to help fund the way. Our JGS team is unable to go, unfortunately, because last week's snowstorm kept us out of the regional competition. Still, if you are able to donate or share to support another local team it would be appreciated! See Go Fund Me link, below!

The weather window was perfect for the JGS Skiathon on Monday. The course was a new design for us and the reviews were "thumbs up". Two hills, two loops and a two-way traffic section provided variety as well as ample opportunities to see friends along the course. We loved skiing with the Jackson Police! The snacks were delicious and provided much needed fuel for the skiers. The Pokemon and Mario signs were also a big hit.
THANK YOU to ALL! To Ellen, Emily, and PJ of Jackson XC for setting up the course and skiing with us. Thank you to the snow groomers and the rest of the JXC staff for all you do, providing our students with access to great xc skiing each winter. Thank you to the volunteer parents and staff who helped with set up, food, signs, cheering, counting laps, clean up, and skiing with the students. A special thanks to Susan for everything she does to help with this event.
Thank you students. Your support and encouragement for each other was evident, truly a joy to watch. A shout out to our first year skiers. It was a thrill to see your skills grow in just six weeks. And to say our JGS students have stamina and determination is an understatement. Once again, after three hours and official ending time, some asked to ski more laps.
The PTO thanks all for your support of this fundraiser. Pledge Forms & money are due by Tuesday, March 19th. ~ Mrs. Porter

Greetings from the Nursing Office,
I want to share a few announcements as we head into the weekend!
1) Monday Morning Yoga Program began this week! We welcome new participants to jump in any Monday morning at 7:30am. This program will continue through the end of March. Again we do yoga from 7:30am to 8:10am and smoothies are provided before participants head to class. Parents or caregivers are welcome to join!
2) Health Classes have begun for students in K-4. So far we have covered the immune system, breaking the ‘chain of infection,’ hand-washing and the 3-4 just started learning about nutrition. Ask your child what they are learning about these topics!
3) Cold and Flu season continues. If your child has symptoms of COVID 19, please administer a home COVID test and keep your child home for 5 days if they test is positive.
Please review the CDC recommendations on cold and flu prevention:
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/updated/Everyday-Preventive-Actions_2021.pdf
Encourage your child to practice frequent hand-washing (before every meal and snack and after using the bathroom). Encourage your child to get enough sleep! Ideally children 6-12 get 10-12 hours of sleep at night. Encourage your child to consume plenty of protein and vitamin-rich foods!

5/6 French students enjoyed a delicious cheese fondue "après ski" experience at The Wentworth Inn although for us it was avant ski (before our JGS Nordic program). Un GRAND MERCI à Irina, Henry Sirois, le chef and all of The Wentworth staff for such a warm welcome! Monsieur Sirois, who grew up in Northern Maine and has lived in Quebec and Tanzania, sat with us and spoke a bit of French with us. Our JGS students were excellent representatives of our school pledge during our visit and our parting words were “A la prochaine!”--until next time!

Fall Festival is Friday, Oct. 27, from 12:30-3PM. Pumpkins, Apples
This is an annual JGS tradition!
Students will have a routine Friday morning. After lunch they will break into groups and attend several Fall-themed activities lead by JGS staff and guests.
Each student should bring in a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face drawn on it to carve during the festivities. Be sure to have the student's initials marked on the pumpkin, too. The carved pumpkins will be on display in front of the school on Halloween night. Pumpkins due on Wednesday, Oct. 25! Let Mrs. Hill know if you need assistance getting a pumpkin.
We need a few more apples for cider pressing. Home-grown or store-bought (but don't buy apples just for this event!), all will go into making CIDER! If you have 2-4 apples to send along with your student, we'll add them to the press!
All adults are welcome to join in the fun and help with activities. Please email Mrs Hill at v_hill@sau9.org to volunteer.
The JGS PTO is excited to host Taekwondo with Sensei Ryan Murphy. This class is for Kindergarteners and up. Classes start Wednesday, November 1st from 5:30-6:30 at the Whitney Community Center. Mrs. Brennan's 3/4 Class
Mrs. Davis's Art Classes -
Thank you to Chief Jay Henry and Firefighter Deirdre for coming to ASM with fire safety tips - especially around cooking! Besides swapping stories of the smoke detector going off while cooking pancakes, the Chief geared up in his turn out gear so that students could see what a firefighter in action would wear and look like so as not to be afraid. Jay reminded families that there's one smoke detector needed in each bedroom and that each family should create and practice a fire escape and meeting place plan. For more fire safety tips, see www.nfpa.org/education

Note from the Nursing Office:
We will be administering hearing and vision screenings for all students during the school day on Friday, October 13th. This year we will offer screening to all students since we have the capacity to do so. A permission form will be sent home next week in order for you to authorize your child's participation in these screenings.
All the Best,

JGS News for September 29, 2023
This news was also emailed to addresses on file.
Did you know...That Mrs. Heysler is piloting a new science program from Open SciEd? This program is based on the 3 dimensions of the Next Gen Science Standards and its focus is learning while doing. The first unit has students learning about the cycle of energy through a system, and for this age group they'll see that in action while studying life in a nurse log. Several terrariums are set up in Mrs. Heysler's room where the class is hosting millipedes, pill bugs, and two types of beetles. Sadly, a few of the giant (harmless) millipedes have escaped and now have several unexcused absences. One has been returned to its terrarium by members of the K12 after a short visit to their classroom. During Buddy Time today, JGS students created a tribute to the escapees to be depicted in our 2023 Return of the Pumpkin People display. Maybe it'll inspire our millipedes to return to the classroom (hopefully with a note from their parents!)

Handbook Highlights:
Attendance in School is this week's Highlight. Many of you know that JGS is required by law to document student attendance and that absences can lead to retention. We are required to note whether a child's absence is Excused or Unexcused. We will take each child's absence on a case by case basis.
To do this, please let us know why your child is absent: doctor's appointment, family event, ill, etc. An email, call, or text that doesn't give a reason will be documented as an unexcused absence.
In addition, you might have noticed the green Extended Leave Request that came home in the First Day of School packet. That will help us document why a child is absent if your family is planning a long trip during the school year. We will do our utmost to help your child make up missed work, and the policy in the handbook goes into more detail about that.
Check out:
Attendance and Absence Policies
Page 12 of the JGS Student Handbook
Here's the nitty gritty: "... the following steps have been established to assure that there is a clear understanding as to the cause of the absence and that school attendance is maximized:
● After 10 days of absence the student will be asked to conference with the principal and a letter will be sent home to the parent.
● After 15 days of absence parents will be asked to attend a parent-teacher conference with the principal.
● After 20 days of absence, retention may be considered."
Please note that these absences include excused and unexcused.
This section of the Student Handbook also addresses tardies. Emails, texts, and calls from parents will allow us to document your child's tardy as "excused." Each classroom has a slightly different morning routine that gets started at 8:30, so students who are late will miss part of their morning meeting, lunch count, and early work.
Hello, JGS Families - Mrs. Messer's News is attached and everything was emailed to your email address on file.
Hello, JGS Families - here in the JGS office I'm in the midst of familiarizing myself with your updates to your students' information on PowerSchool. One thing I'm noticing: out of town emergency contacts. Please consider updating your child's emergency contacts to someone local - a neighbor, friend, or local family. I will always contact parents and guardians if there's an emergency, but if I can't get hold of you I will need to contact someone else. Here's what the JGS Student Handbook has to say about this:
IN-SCHOOL EMERGENCIES AND UNPLANNED EARLY DISMISSALS
An emergency telephone number is required of all parents or guardians! Your number at work and a complete list of two emergency contacts’ numbers will be most helpful in case of illness or injury. Be sure that your children understand where they should go if some emergency causes school to be dismissed at an unscheduled time when you might be away from home. On days when school is dismissed early due to inclement weather, parents are called—if you can not be reached, your designated emergency contact will be called. For this reason, your emergency contact should live locally and be someone other than yourself and/or your child’s other parent. When the weather threatens in the middle of the school day you can help us by listening to the radio for early release information and contacting us if you suspect we are unable to contact you.
Please contact me if you don't have a local contact. I can help with this. Susan

Extended Learning Opportunities
The Jackson School District is looking to compile a list of Jackson business owners who are willing to host ELO students from Kennett High School. An ELO is an extended learning opportunity that offers students the chance to receive credit for learning outside of the traditional classroom. Students can intern with a local business or non-profit, job shadow with a professional in their workplace or create an independent study plan.
If you would be willing to offer your time and knowledge to a JGS alum, please reply to Victoria Hill at v_hill@sau9.org. Kindly include your business/organization and contact information. Mrs Hill will create a list of opportunities that will be shared with Jackson students. If a student is interested in working with your business, you will be contacted with more information.

How to Become a Better Recycler
With a goal of 40%, less than 23% of New Hampshire waste is recycled.
At the Transfer Station glass cannot be recycled, mixed paper is too costly to
recycle, and the biggest problem is – PLASTIC! The Town is paid 3.2 cents per
pound for plastics which is 24% of the cost to prepare and ship plastic bales to be
recycled.
On Monday, September 11 th from 7-8:30 pm, How to Become a Better Recycler,
sponsored by the Climate Change Working Group in conjunction with the Friends
of the Whitney Community Center will take place at the Whitney Community
Center. Bob Blake from the Bartlett/Jackson Transfer Station will be in attendance to
answer questions and provide important recycling information. Please plan to attend. Pass the word. Learn how you can become a better recycler and reduce waste.

END 68 Hours of Hunger
Welcome back Jackson Families! We have a wonderful program in our community that provides weekend food assistance to any family who might benefit. Each Friday a bag of food is sent home with students whose families sign up that can provide extra nourishment for the 68 hours between the end of school on Friday and the beginning of school on Monday. For that reason, this program is known as END 68 Hours of Hunger. The bags are tucked into backpacks so as to not be visible to others and participation in the program is confidential. If your family could benefit from the program, please email me at v_hill@sau9.org to have your name added to the list.
Here's to a great school year! Victoria Hill, School Counselor

We're back to school and it's still New England with mornings temps starting off cool and by recess we're shedding our layers. This leaves the school with piles of black sweatshirts. If you'd like me to mark your child's initials on their "unique" black sweatshirt, I have a white laundry marker (and a black one for other colors.) Just have your kiddo stop by the school office. Unmarked apparel will be laid out on the porch benches. Susan

Market Match and SNAP Opportunities at MWV Farmers' Market
Hello,
I'm reaching out as school has started back up for our SAU 9 families, and our board wanted to make sure that your students and their households were aware that the Mount Washington Valley Farmers' Market is still going strong with five markets left.
Our market offers access to local food, community, and a chance to connect with non-profits in the valley offering valuable services. Additionally, we participate in the Granite State Market Match program, which doubles all SNAP/EBT dollars spent at the market. Information is attached!

August 2, 2023 - emailed to JGS staff and families
Good Afternoon Jackson Families,
I hope that everyone is enjoying some of these beautiful August days! I am looking forward to the beginning of the school year and welcoming families and students back. I know that there is much anticipation and many questions regarding staffing for the upcoming school year. As you know, staffing is a challenge nation-wide as well as SAU wide but we are working diligently to interview and hire candidates who are qualified and the right fit for our school. I will be communicating staffing plans no later than August 15th. Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout this process.
Sincerely,
Erin Messer

Dear Staff and JGS Community,
I have attached a summary from the SWOT analysis created from the Parent Forum. I strongly believe that feedback is a powerful tool when used properly. Feedback can produce many emotions but I believe that if we look at it through the lense of a group of people who care deeply about our school community we can better use the information to ignite positive change! I look forward to more collaborative opportunities together.
Happy August!
