Fall Festival Information from Mrs. Hill

Fall Festival is Friday, October 31 from 12:30 - 3:00. Any family members who would like to join us and help with pumpkin carving or cider pressing are welcome. Please email Mrs. Hill at v_hill@sau9.org to let her know if you plan to attend. It's always lots of fun!

Each student should bring in a pumpkin that has been hollowed out and has a face drawn on it by Thursday, October 30. Students will carve the faces during Fall Festival. Don't forget a name or initials on the pumpkin. All of the jack-o-lanterns will be lit on Halloween night outside of the school. Be sure to drive by and enjoy the spooky sight.

For the cider pressing, we'll need 150 apples to make enough for everyone at Fall Festival, and Grades 5-6 worked out that we'll need 7 apples per family at JGS. Please send in some apples with your students -  but not to worry! Staff will also bring in apples, so only send in apples if you can!

DROP, COVER, HOLD ON!

On Thursday, JGS participated in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. For more information about this drill, see https://www.shakeout.org/dropcoverholdon/

See the attached Fire and Home Safety Tips from the Jackson Fire Department for more info to protect home and family and don't forget the Jackson Safety Fair this Saturday!

Traffic Pop-Up - reprint from From E News, 9.29.25

From the North Country Council:
Why is Jackson doing this Traffic Calming Demonstration?
Community members and Town of Jackson leaders have expressed a desire to see a change at the intersection of Main Street (NH-16A) and Black Mountain Road (NH-16B) that could reduce speeds and create more opportunities for pedestrian spaces. Additionally, the Jackson Historical Society moved its building closer to Main Street, and in planning for that change, conceptual designs were drawn up by Aceto Kimbal Landscape Architecture for reimagining this area with a Tee’d up intersection, sidewalk infrastructure, and more green space for the public. NH DOT approved the setup of this temporary traffic calming demonstration you see today.
Limitations to the Demonstration: The Traffic Calming demonstration is limited to using the existing roadway. It’s important to remember that any permanent change would include relocating the traffic island and memorial stones to create a straightened and more manageable T-intersection. NH DOT would have to approve any final road designs and it would likely be an intersection that does not feature the sharp turn at the corner with the two crosswalks you see today. Because the demonstration is temporary and constrained to the existing roadway, it can take some imagination to picture it as a reconfigured intersection. We suggest you take a look at the conceptual designs from Aceto Kimball that can help you envision what could be here in the future. Posters are on site, and we encourage you to check them out!
What happens after the Traffic Calming Demonstration?
On October 6th, the demonstration will be removed, and the intersection will resume its normal configuration. North Country Council will work to process the traffic count data and responses from the Survey and use those to write a summary report for the Town of Jackson. This report can be used to supplement CIP project proposals, a Master Plan Update, or referenced when it comes time to apply for project funding. This demonstration is the beginning of the process to a permanent change to the intersection.
Where can I share my feedback if I have some?
North Country Council has prepared a survey to collect feedback on the demonstration. The survey can be completed HERE.
If you have additional comments or questions, please contact Courtney Bowler at cbowler@nccouncil.org or 603-444-6303 ext. 2029.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas in the environment.  In NH, 1 in 3 homes have elevated levels of radon, and testing is the only way to know whether it is present.  Students in grades 5-8 are invited to help raise awareness of radon safety by entering New Hampshire Radon Program's annual poster contest!  The winner of this statewide contest will receive a $100 gift card.

Join us at Jackson Public Library on Thursday, October 9th from 5 - 6pm for a poster making party!  We'll provide materials and snacks.  You provide the creativity!

We will display the posters during the Jackson Safety Fair and then enter them into the contest the following week.

Hello, all,

Our Jaguars reunion has been very sweet and we're settling into our different groups and teams with ease and engagement. It's always amazing to watch the Jaguars navigate new and diverse opportunities with adaptability and confidence.

We have a new opportunity for Art Club students to join Mrs. Groves for a book group on Monday afternoons.

She hopes to share the magic of reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.

This would be instead of our regular Art Club activities and would take place at the school from 3:30 until 4:45 starting next Monday, September 22, and continue to meet every Monday through the end of October.

If you have a student who's not currently registered for Monday's Enrichment but would like to join the Book Group, please email me at k_byrne@sau9.org and I'll send the registration form.

If your student would like to switch from our regular Art Club group and join Mrs. Groves for some afternoon literary enchantment, please email me to let me know.

To kick off this year's Summit to the Sea Theme,

JGS students and classroom staff spent Monday in Pinkham Notch with the Appalachian Mountain Club's Mountain Classroom.  At All School Meeting on Thursday, students and staff unpacked their "backpack of experiences" to take a look at the field trip in the larger context of Community, Learning, and Fun.  After a few rounds of "Bop the Shmoo" (ask your kiddo), 3-4 teacher, Emily Taylor led the discussion.

Mrs. Taylor asked students and staff to help make a list activities from the field trip:  hike, visit a waterfall, see the summit of Mt. Washington,, paint, talk with friends, read maps, play games...

find Lost Pond...

sketch in their Summit to Sea journals...

learn about rocks, mountains, plants...Everyone found fun ways to get to know new and old friends.

Next, the students were asked to contribute to the list of Why was it important to start the school year with a field trip like this? The discussion came around to: our theme is Summit to the Sea (most of us visited the summit  of Mt. Washington at the end of last school year, and we could see it during this field trip, too,) This shared experience helps us work together as a team. Everyone started on the same trail across Rt 16 from Joe Dodge Lodge. Everyone found fun ways to get to know new and old friends.

As a team we made sure everyone was ready, safe, and part of the activity.

But not every experience was the same: some groups headed towards Lost Pond while others climbed to Square Ledge.

As school leaders, 5/6 had some instruction in the traits of a leader.

Starting on the same path and sharing similar experiences is like the school day.

Now what? Mrs. Taylor prompted the students to think about how they could build on their Pinkham Notch experience during the school day. Students responded that they can start the school year strong because they know their classmates better after their shared experiences, that they can learn better and differently with strategies they practiced in activities on the field trip, that they have more ideas about 'respecting the world around us... "

...and that the morning pack check at AMC was a lot like morning meeting at JGS when teachers and students check in about the day's schedule, lunch, homework, and how everyone's doing - "we each take responsibility for own actions but we also reach out helping hands" - helping our classmates feel supported and ready to learn.

After School Enrichment  had an engaging week of enrichment despite February vacation and mountains of fresh fluffy snow on our minds!

On Monday, our big WMSI group teamed up to make the dream work on our own Jaguars' Mountain, digging avalanche pits and building slippy slides and stairways.

On Tuesday, our art club studied Valentine's Day by sharing one of the most ancient and intuitive acts of love; making healthy, wholesome, and homemade food together, and love for our planet by using recycled paper to make labels and gift cards to share our granola with loved ones.

Jaguars love snowy hard work, eating robust and nourishing snacks, and the warmest of all, Jaguars love love!

From Mrs. Hill, JGS School Counselor/Family Advocate

From time to time I like to share podcast episodes from Lynn Lyons, an anxiety specialist who helps parents and other caregivers learn how to help anxious kids grow. This particular episode is worth a listen:

News from the Jackson Public Library

Join us at the Jackson Public Library for a Once Upon A Story Hour program on Thursday, February 20th from 4-5 p.m.  Mother Nature will be there to read stories and lead a discussion on why we recycle.  Participants will create a recycling mascot!

When children are exposed to pertinent information inclusive of hands-on activities and imagination, they blossom with more confidence to explore and learn in the world at large. Once Upon A Story Hour aims for all children to enjoy their learning, achieve their fullest potential, and become inquisitive life-long learners. This program is free and open to the public.

Happy School Counselors' Week, Mrs. Hill!

Ks Ruled the School with Mrs. Heysler and Mrs. Tower last Friday, learning about Ground Hog Day and experimenting with making shadows that the ground hog would see in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon.  Thank you to Tin Mtn Conservation Center for lending us their ground hog!

Winter enrichment has been a joyous whirlwind of respectful teamwork, new ideas, creative expression, and healthy movement.

We're always thankful to share special after-school time with your little ones.

Kathy Byrne, Jackson Grammar School Enrichment

The Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds group made Hobby Horses to race around obstacle courses. Special Guest Darren Piotrow joined the races and also shared his training and meal planning as a professional cyclist.

Art Club crushed Life Savers candies and rolled and cut out dough to create "stained glass window" cookies. Did they share with you?

Art Club also worked for 3 afternoons creating mosaics. Students glued on the tiles and completed the grouting last week (these are pre-grout.) Thank you, Mr. Walsh, for cutting the plywood backers for our mosaics!

This project took patience, fine motor coordination, and lots of attention! Students were able to work at their own level, and each worked so hard ! They should be proud of the project they created!

Please pay attention to today's attachments, in particular the 2025 ESSC routine parent letter. This contains very important info about our Friday downhill ski routine. There is a form that all families, K-6,  MUST RETURN TO ME ON MONDAY.

This information was also sent home on pink paper with at least 1 of your children. Please read it, complete the last page, and return the last page to the school office on Monday.

ESSC ski Fridays info for Families of First-Sixth Graders:

2025 JGS ESSC at Black Mountain Ski Area Updates (also attached)

The biggest change in our Friday ski routine is how we get ski tickets. Black Mountain Ski Area will be using refillable ski cards, called rfid ticketing/pass, instead of stickers and wickets. we do not have all the information, yet, but please be aware: there is a 2-step online registration process that parents need to complete.

Step 1 - set up an account with Black Mountain Ski Area. Parents will need to go online to set up an account with Black Mountain for your JGS skier and yourself, if you are a volunteer. You can set up your account now at this link: https://estore.blackmt.com/register Uploading a photo of your skier and volunteer will expedite the handing out of cards on Friday.

Step 2: Once we have more info from the folks at Black Mountain you will need to go online to this account to sign a waiver and enter other info pertinent to the JGS ESSC program. This online ski card registration is specific to Black Mountain for our use for ESSC and separate from the (great) online work you did for signing up your kiddo with ESSC.

Please note:

  • Students will need to have this card with them for every Friday we ski. The card can live in their ski jacket. The school will be charged for replacing every forgotten or lost card, so please help your child keep track of their card.

  • Our plan is to have the cards ready for the kids on the 10th. As soon as I have the second set of info from Black Mtn I will send it to you. Please complete it as soon as you can, knowing that we will be using it on Friday, Jan. 10.

  • Volunteers, you can set up your account and complete the waiver once the info is available. For each Friday we ski, volunteers will need to check in with the ticket line to get their cards activated for the day. Bernie will be emailing volunteers to know who will be available on that Friday and will be forwarding Black Mountain the volunteer list every Thursday evening / Friday morning. More volunteer info, below!

If a student or volunteer already has a Black Mountain season pass (alpine with no blackout dates), they are exempt from all of this since they're already set up and will use their existing rfid card.

These cards can be loaded for ski tickets on days outside of our Friday afternoons and for use in the snack bar.

Rfid cards are required to access the mountain at all times so it’s important to help your skier pack it for Friday ski days. There is a $5 charge for replacement cards and the student’s (or volunteer’s) time skiing will be delayed while a replacement card is issued.

ESSC Volunteers! Thank you!

Monday, Jan 6. 3:05 PM: Bernie will host a meeting for ESSC Vols in the WCC Unified Arts Room. This should run under an hour and give you lots of info about the JGS program and how the staff will offer support.

Friday, Jan 10, at 9AM: on-snow clinic for vols at Black Mountain. Attending this will satisfy the 1 on-snow clinic to get your ESSC benefit card, give you pointers on teaching kids to ski, plus show you all the cool upgrades at Black!

Notes from the JGS Nurse's Office:

1) The CDC is reporting higher numbers of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae than usual since August 2024, particularly among young children.  M. Pneumoniae is also known as 'Walking Pneumonia' since it is a bacteria that causes a more mild form of pneumonia.  Fever, cough and sore throat are common initial symptoms that present in a person who has an respiratory infection caused by M. Pneumoniae.  M. Pneumoniae usually causes a mild cold, but can cause pneumonia, worsening asthma symptoms or encephalitis.  You can help boost your child's resistance to contracting M. Pneumoniae by encouraging frequent hand-washing and taking general measures to support the immune system: adequate sleep; healthy dietary intake; a multivitamin; regular exercise outdoors; and bundling up in cold weather!  For more information: https://www.cdc.gov/ncird/whats-new/mycoplasma-pneumoniae-infections-have-been-increasing.html

2)  JGS School Turkey Trot: Mark your calendar for our JGS School Turkey Trot on Monday, 11.25.2024 at 1:30pm.  Start and Finish will be behind Madeline's on the golf course.  There will be Turkeys, Gratitude and Fun!

3) Jackson 5K Turkey Trot and Kids Fun Run: Bring your family and friends to participate in the annual Jackson 5K Turkey Trot and Kids Fun Run!  This is a fundraiser for our JGS Wellness Committee.  The JGS XC Running Group and Wellness Committee are facilitating this event in collaboration with White Mountain Ski Company.  There will be running, refreshments, community, fun and pies as prizes!! We hope to see you there!!

Not Community News, but THE WAY IT IS:  Please stay off the piles of mulch. Parents, staff:  do not allow children to climb or dig in the piles at any time. We will use this mulch in the spring, adding it to the play area and around the  plants there.

Food Drive for the End 68 Hours of Hunger Program - see below!

Mindful Minute: Take 5 deep 5-count  breaths in and slow 5-count breaths out. Think about how you can help, how you have helped.

JGS Fifth and Sixth Graders are hosting a food drive to help fill the pantry at End 68 Hours of Hunger.

News from the School Counselor's Office

Here in Mount Washington Valley we have a local chapter of a program called End 68 Hours of Hunger.  Each week this program delivers bags of food to our schools to ensure that all of our students have enough food to eat during the weekend when school breakfast and lunch is not available.  Our local chapter needs our help, as they are running low on some of the essential items that go in the bags each week.

We will be doing a food drive here at school to help them stock their pantries.  They are looking for the following items:

  • canned tuna

  • canned soup/ravioli

  • ramen

  • mac and cheese

If your family is interested in donating, your child can bring in one of the above items Thursday Oct. 3 through Thursday, Oct. 10th.  These items can be dropped off on the blue table on the school porch or sent in to school with your Jaguar.  Please check expiration dates for donating.

Thanks!

Hello, JGS Families and Friends!

This mail was emailed to parent and friend addresses on file and came home in backpacks.

JGS Odyssey of the Mind Teams Need Coaches!

We have two JGS OM teams: grades 3-5 and grade 6. Ms. Amy will coach one, and will gladly assist a coach or co-coaches for the other. What would that entail?

  • Practices Thursday afternoons from 3:00-4:45 from November until winter break. In January the day will switch (possibly to Wednesdays) through the Maine Competition date of April 5th, with the possibility of continuing on if teams are going to the World Finals (in May in Michigan).

  • Gives practice spontaneous and team building problems.

  • Goes over the guidelines and requirements of the problem with the team.

  • Keeps teams safe while they are working and creating!

There is NO OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE permitted. Getting ideas and help from anyone not on the team is a penalty. The point of Odyssey is to let the kids do the work, and it is amazing to see what they can come up with when we don’t give them ideas- I have been pleasantly surprised both years I have been involved. This is the hardest part, but is SO worth it!

If you're interested or have questions, please reach out to Ms. Amy!

High School Tuition Options

On Monday, September 30, 2024, the Jackson School Board will host Barrett M. Christina, Executive Director of the New Hampshire School Board Association (NHSBA), and William Phillips, NHSBA Staff Attorney & Director of Policy Services to present an overview of high school tuition options at The Whitney Center in Jackson at 6:30pm, immediately following a regularly scheduled school board meeting at 6:00pm and a high school options committee meeting at 5:00pm.
In September of 2022, the board voted to opt out of extending the current 20-year contract with Conway for educating Jackson's high school students and the high school options committee has been working on gathering community input and information to present to the community since June of 2024.
This is the first of several community conversations the board will host this fall. Others include a facilitated community meet and greet with Kevin Carpenter, Principal at Kennett High School and Joseph Manning, Head of School at Fryeburg Academy on October 21st at 7:00pm at The Whitney Center and a tentative presentation on special education in November.
These information presentations are meant to educate the community and board about some of the critical issues being considered as they relate to educating our high school students and to help gather citizen input for the board as well.
Questions or comments on these topics can be directed to Jackson School Board Chair, Jessica DellaValla, at j_dellavalla@sau9.org or committee member Michael Korthuis, at michael.korthuis@gmail.com.

ESSC School Rep Needed

Jackson Grammar School has been very fortunate to have Neil Stokes serve as our ESSC School Rep  over the past 12 years (plus 2 as a ski vol!)  As much as he has enjoyed this opportunity he is ready to pass the torch.  Neil is happy and willing to provide support to a new representative  through this season.  Some of the responsibilities of this position include: attending planning meetings in the Fall, communicating with the mountain, organizing volunteers, creating groups, organizing equipment rental, transporting equipment to the mountain, setting up at the mountain, etc.  Having a dedicated school rep is a vital part of our program and what makes these awesome ski days possible.  Please contact the main office if you are interested in this position or want to learn more!

Want to be a school volunteer with sports, events, in the classroom, or on field trips? You will need a Criminal Background Check (CBC.)

Use this link to the SAU 9 website to start the process today if you do not yet have a CBC in place. Returning volunteers! Never fear! If you're not on my "OK to Volunteer" list, I will let you know!  ~Susan

The items are Bella+Canvas and run on the smaller size. If you are interested in an item, please reach out. We will also plan to bring any remaining extras to curriculum night next week.

The sweatshirts are $30 for youth an $35 for adult. The tee-shirts are all $15.
