Immigration By the Numbers
Human migration by choice or by force is a global issue that will only continue to gain in prominence. Grade 5 students participated in a cross-content unit, studying immigration and origin stories. As part of this project, they crunched numbers in math class, creating immigration infographics to convey complicated data in a simple visual format.

Students read the novel Esperanza Rising, which is a heartwarming story of a young girl who learns the importance of love and sacrifice for family and friends. It is also a lesson in the cultural and personal struggles that poor families, especially immigrants and farm laborers, must experience.
Students heard origin stories from parents and faculty members helping to build empathy for immigrants and their unique pathway to the United States.
Students listened to a presentation from Lu Zeidan, who is the Refugee Program Co-Director at Interfaith Action of Central Texas. Zeidan came to Texas from Lebanon in 2001, having lived through years of civil war. She helped students understand what it is like to navigate a new culture and language and how to be welcoming to refugees and other newcomers.
