ABOUT TECHNOLOGY CLASS
In our Technology class at Saint Leo the Great Catholic School, we employ a spiral curriculum that progresses from K-8th grade, continuously developing essential concepts to prepare students as successful and responsible digital citizens who use technology for lifelong learning. We cover a range of age-appropriate topics including technology systems, digital citizenship, Internet safety, and the use of digital tools for gathering and organizing information, problem-solving, creating, innovating, and enhancing learning through collaboration.
Aligned with the ISTE* Standards for Students, our curriculum empowers students to take an active role in their education, leveraging technology to achieve and demonstrate competency in their learning goals. Students are encouraged to become Digital Citizens, recognizing their responsibilities and the opportunities for contributing positively in digital communities. They also act as Knowledge Constructors, using digital tools to critically curate resources and construct knowledge. As Innovative Designers and Computational Thinkers, they engage in problem-solving using a variety of technologies and strategies. Furthermore, as Creative Communicators and Global Collaborators, they communicate clearly and collaborate with peers around the world, broadening perspectives and enriching their learning experiences. This comprehensive approach ensures that learning is a student-driven process, preparing them to thrive in an evolving technological landscape. [ISTE Standards for Students]
In our classes, we're set to engage in both hard work and fun, employing a dynamic approach that includes brainstorming, practicing, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and most importantly, creating. We utilize Bloom’s Taxonomy to cultivate higher-order thinking skills, promoting complex and creative thought processes. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs guides our understanding of the importance of online safety, which is crucial for effective learning and personal growth. Additionally, we emphasize Emotional Intelligence to enhance our understanding of our own emotions and those of others, boost our motivation, think win/win, and improve our collaborative skills. This comprehensive strategy is designed to foster success both now and in the future.

In technology class, grades range between 0/X and 3.
3 or about 95% (Exceeds Expectations): A grade of 3 is given when a student not only meets but surpasses expectations. This could mean demonstrating a deeper understanding of concepts, completing tasks with exceptional skill or creativity, or going above and beyond what is required.
2 or about 85% (Meets Expectations): This grade signifies that the student's work meets the basic requirements and expectations. The student demonstrates a satisfactory understanding of the concepts and skills being taught and completes tasks as required.
1 or about 75% (Needs Improvement): A grade of 1 indicates that the student's performance is below the expected level but shows some effort or understanding. There are clear areas where improvement is needed in terms of understanding concepts, completing tasks accurately, or demonstrating skills.
0/X or about 65% or below (Below Expectations or Work Not Done): This grade is given when a student either doesn't complete the assigned work or demonstrates a lack of understanding or effort in the tasks. It signifies that the student's performance falls significantly below the expected level.
Since we are in a Catholic school setting, these grading criteria also emphasize the importance of values such as diligence, responsibility, and respect in addition to academic performance. Factors such as participation, attitude, and behavior are also considered when assessing students' performance, in addition to the quality of work.
At Saint Leo the Great Catholic School, our elementary technology curriculum is designed to empower young minds through a blend of engaging digital literacy fundamentals and creative project work. From the onset, students master internet safety, digital citizenship, and basic typing skills, utilizing platforms like Canva and Tinkercad to foster creativity and technical skills. Our curriculum, enriched by Google Docs and Scratch, emphasizes higher-order thinking skills via Bloom's Taxonomy, promoting not just understanding and application but also innovation and creation. As students advance, they design personalized web pages, culminating in a practical, immersive education that aligns with our mission to foster both faith and academic growth.
We further enhance our curriculum with Emotional Intelligence (EI), drawing on Daniel Goleman’s principles of self-awareness, empathy, and self-motivation. These EI elements are woven into our technology projects and digital citizenship lessons, boosting students' capability to navigate the digital world responsibly and pursue personal goals effectively. This integration not only nurtures their digital proficiency but also their emotional intelligence, preparing them to be compassionate, motivated, and well-rounded individuals.

At Saint Leo the Great Catholic School, our middle school technology curriculum is designed to deeply engage students with the digital world, equipping them for both academic success and responsible digital citizenship. Starting with fundamental skills like typing and internet safety, the curriculum quickly advances to more complex topics such as digital etiquette and creating content using platforms like Canva and Tinkercad. Students apply these skills in real-world scenarios, crafting personal projects from "All About Me" booklets to detailed personal websites with interactive features like polls and visitor counters. By integrating Bloom's Taxonomy and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, we foster higher-order thinking and a spirit of altruism.
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is pivotal in our curriculum, enhancing our rigorous academic framework. As students navigate advanced digital tools and complex projects, lessons on empathy, self-awareness, and particularly self-motivation are crucial for their personal and academic development. This comprehensive approach not only prepares students to handle technological and social challenges adeptly but also aligns with our mission to cultivate faith and academic growth, following Jesus' example. Through this holistic educational strategy, students become not only technologically proficient but also emotionally intelligent, ready to excel and contribute positively in a modern context.
