Advanced Science: Genetics

Prerequisite: Biology I

One Credit/One Semester course

Course Description

  • GENETICS is the scientific study of HEREDITY. This one semester course will be an in depth study of the processes and methods that allow organisms to pass their traits on to their offspring.

  • The course will begin with MITOSIS/MEIOSIS and PATTERNS OF HEREDITY, and the relationship between genes and the expression of traits.

  • The course will continue with an in-depth exploration of CHROMOSOMES and associated disorders.

This is a science course, and that means LABS!

Students will engage in an in-depth FRUIT FLY EXPERIMENT and other lab activities.

This course will often address themes of CELL BIOLOGY and ETHICS.

What is the connection between the molecular world and the physical traits of organisms?

How do we use genetic technology today and how should we use it in the future?
