Compare & Contrast

As we continue to focus on nonfiction text structure, students read articles with the author's purpose of showing the similarities and differences between two topics. Students read articles titled:

"How Greenland and Iceland Got Their Names"

"Social Media: Then and Now"

"Sharks: The Great White vs The Hammerhead"

Students worked together to record the main similarities and differences in Venn Diagrams.

This week, students learned about the basic text structures of nonfiction or informational text. We read nonfiction articles and looked for key words that give clues about the type of text structure represented. Our main focus was on cause and effect. Students were most interested in the article that discussed the effects of the eradication of wolves from Yellowstone National Park.

MATH

Fractions are fun!!!

We are adding and subtracting fractions borrowing and regrouping if needed and converting mixed numbers to improper fractions. I love watching the light bulbs go off as students grasp new math concepts.

Biography Project

Students are finishing up taking notes for their biography paper. Students are now organizing their notecards in chronological order so they can begin writing their rough drafts.

Vocabulary

It was entertaining and interesting listening to students share their slideshows containing the new vocabulary they learned with the suffix -phobia.
