Leadership Week

This week we celebrated leadership by sharing kindness in our classroom, in our school, and in the community. During Writing Workshop, we learned how to write formal letters to show our appreciation to the staff at Roycemore. After brainstorming the different roles and jobs, students worked with a partner to write a rough draft. We learned about editing, revising, and worked hard to write our final drafts to express our appreciation. Their warm and heartfelt appreciation radiated from the fourth graders as they excitedly delivered the letters to teachers and staff.

Roycemore Garden Harvest

The fourth graders have been busy at work in the garden! This Fall the 4th graders were responsible for harvesting the crops. In the Spring, they will be responsible for planning and planting next year's garden. So far, students have harvested pumpkins, carrots, potatoes, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, parsley, green beans, kale, cilantro, basil, onions, eggplant, cucumbers, dill, rosemary, and jalapeno peppers. Now that we have harvested the garden, we are looking forward to eating the wonderful food and preparing the garden for winter. We are in the process of figuring out how to incorporate all of the foods into a recipe that will taste amazing! Suggestions are welcome!

The fourth grade students enjoyed the Stand Up, Speak Out Tour at the Illinois Holocaust Museum.

Students read and discussed the book Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family's Journey by Margriet Ruurs.

They learned about how important it is to be an Upstander who cares for those in need. Specifically, they learned about the Ryan's Well Foundation. "The Foundation grew from the passion and courage of one 6-year-old boy, Ryan Hreljac. Ryan was inspired to take action as a grade one student when he learned of the devastating consequences for people without access to safe drinking water. He was remarkably determined as he succeeded in rallying his community to help him raise the funds needed to build one well in Uganda, Africa. One well that has changed everything. Now more than 20 years later, Ryan’s Well Foundation is a family of people committed to providing access to safe water and sanitation as an essential way to improve lives in the developing world."

1. There is No School tomorrow, Monday, September 30th in observance of Rosh Hashanah.

2. Roycemore Day is this Friday! Please make sure your child wears their blue Roycemore shirt. We will be taking a school wide picture!

3. There will be regular/routine homework beginning on Tuesday. Students will have reading, word work, and math homework all with differing due dates. Please help your child to "put first things first" and "begin with the end in mind" by helping them find a time and a quiet place to complete their homework. I recommend that students complete their homework before they are completely exhausted! Also, I tell students they can also "put first things first" by putting all of their supplies in their backpack before they go to bed, so they don't forget their homework or notebooks at home. Again, the purpose of homework is to promote responsibility and independence. Please let me know if your child is having a difficult time.

4. Snacks must be NUT-FREE! Please do not send in any foods that contain nuts.

5. You can view my class calendar at the top of this website under the Calendar tab. I have listed the leaders of the week and other important events on the calendar.

Codeverse Field Trip: Monday, October 21st

Third and fourth graders will take the CTA bus to Codeverse in Wilmette on Monday, October 21st. Students will learn about a basic and important literacy critical to current times: coding. During their experience they will have an introduction to KidScript. The students will have the chance to begin building their own video game, hack into the lights, and if time permits, they will get to interact with few robots. The main focus will be game creation. Once the field trip is over, the students will have the opportunity to send the game they created to their parents to play! Some coding concepts they will learn are: how to code events, change object attributes, predict object positioning via coordinates, and the use of booleans in coding.

Please send in $5 to cover the cost of the trip and fill out this waiver form. If there are any questions about the waiver, feel free to contact Scott Lyjak, Assistant Studio Manager

(e: scott.lyjak@codeverse.com, p: (844) 644-CODE, codeverse.com).
