April 2021

April 19-23, 2021

Excitement was evident this week as the fourth graders began preparing to plant the 2021-2022 Roycemore School Garden! It is a tradition for the fourth grade class to be in charge of researching, planning and planting the garden. Students measured the area and perimeter to decide how much soil we need for the beds. Then, they brainstorm the plants they would like to plant and research all about how to plant their plant. This week we prepared the soil by picking weeds and turning the soil.

This year the students have decided to plant: mint, lemon balm, parsley, basil, garlic, squash, pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, and beans. They are researching the possibility of planting blackberries and strawberries.

We celebrated Earth Day this week. Students participated in the Roycemore Trashbusters Day, read books, played Kahoot, and completed a directed drawing to learn more about how we can help save our Earth.

Students participated in the national Stand Against Racism movement. All week students created posters to show their support against racism. The fourth graders shared their posters with the community on Friday. We also read aloud a Readers' Theater on Rosa Parks. Students enjoyed reading aloud and learning her story of strength and determination that sparked the Civil Rights Movement!

This week we started our last thematic unit for the year: the Solar System. Students began the unit outside at stations. Students ran from one poster to another poster to record all that they already know about the solar system. Then, students recorded what they wanted to learn about the solar systems by writing down questions for us to solve as we go through this unit. Students spent time reading articles from Newsela and MobyMax to learn more!

The fourth graders were busy writing this week! After spending last week brainstorming, prewriting, and writing the first draft of their personal narrative, students spent this week revising, editing, adding interesting adjectives and adverbs and finally publishing their piece. They also wrote their NC penpals back!

Fractions, Fractions and more Fractions! Students are busy adding, subtracting, simplifying, reducing, comparing and multiplying fractions!
