Evelyn sat on the couch curled up in her Christmas blanket, the feeling of warmth surrounding her. The light from the crackling fire lit up the cover of her book, making it glow like a portal to the world that was written. Her fingers brushed the bottom of the page, the texture familiar, like family. She flipped it, continuing her story. Georgiana, Evelyn's cat, was curled up at her feet, a soft and sleepy grey ball of fluff, deciding the red and green plaid of Evelyn's blanket was the perfect nap spot. She reached down to give her a quick pet, causing Georgiana to purr with contentment, before grabbing her mug filled with hot cocoa. She took a sip and found it was the perfect combination of chocolate and marshmallows, mixing to create a heavenly flavour.
Her gaze turned to their Christmas tree, placed in front of the window. It sat there in all its glory, covered in beautiful glass ornaments and strings of lights, illuminating the snow outside the window. The snow! It was snowing! “Mom! Dad!” Evelyn yelled, hopping off the couch and running to the window. “It’s snowing!” She heard their feet come running down the stairs, and then to the window beside her. For a minute, they all stared in awe at the small white flakes, glistening like pieces of glitter, swirling in the wind.
Her dad rested his arm on her shoulder and put his other around her mother. “It’s beautiful, kiddo.” She smiled up at him, and Evelyn gave him and her mom a quick hug. “I had to let you guys know. I knew you would want to see it.” Her parents smiled at her as she walked back to the couch. Evelyn pulled the blanket back on, trying to rearrange herself around a stubborn Georgiana. She picked her book back up and opened it, returning to her story.
Evelyn's parents walked over to the other chairs, also grabbing their books and sitting down to read. She looked up and paused to take in the moment. This sight of her family all together filled her with happiness, but something else too. Peace enveloped her, wrapping around her like just like her blanket. Maybe it was the snow falling, or the fire crackling. But whatever it was, Evelyn knew she would remember this feeling and look back on it, and as she glanced over at her parents, she was excited for what it would bring.
